Chapter 2 - The Shattered Facade

The aftermath was chaos. Elias didn't need to shout; his presence was enough to send the hired security scurrying. He walked to the chair, his movements fluid and predatory. He reached out, his hand trembling as he brushed the loose hair from Harper’s shoulders.

"Look at you," he whispered, his voice thick with unspent grief. "I’m so sorry, Harper. I stayed away to keep you safe, thinking you were beyond their reach. I was wrong."

Damon regained his composure, his face twisting into a sneer. "You're a trespasser. You’re a ghost. And you’re legally dead. Whatever you have to say won't stand in a courtroom."

"I don't need a courtroom to handle you," Elias replied. He turned to Harper, shielding her from the Caldwells' view. "Harper, honey, listen to me. They aren't just trying to humiliate you. They’re trying to build a narrative of 'post-partum instability' to institutionalize you and sign away your inheritance—the trust your mother left you. The one you never knew about."

Damon’s face went white. The secret was out.

Harper looked at her husband—the man she had loved, the man who had promised to protect her—and felt nothing but cold, crystalline hatred. She stood up, ignoring the patches of shaved hair. She wasn't a victim anymore. She had her father.

"Get out," Harper said, her voice shaking but resolute.

"Harper, don't listen to him—" Damon started, stepping forward.

"I said, get out," she repeated.

Elias placed a hand on Damon’s chest, pushing him back with surprising force. "The police are on their way, Damon. Not for me. For the financial records I’ve been collecting for the last six months. The ones that prove you didn't build Caldwell Industries. You stole it."
