Chapter 5 - The Gala

The Caldwell Foundation Gala was the biggest event of the year. The press was hungry for a scandal. They expected to see Harper in a wheelchair, sedated, proving the Caldwells' narrative.
When the car door opened, the flashbulbs exploded.
Harper stepped out. She wasn't wearing the maternity dress they had picked out for her—the one meant to make her look frail and matronly. She wore a sharp, black tuxedo suit. Her shaved head was polished, framing her face like a diamond. She looked powerful, terrifying, and completely sane.
Beside her, Elias walked with the authority of a king reclaiming his throne.
They walked right up to the main stage. The livestream cameras, set up by Marissa for the foundation’s "charity" promo, were recording everything.
Damon tried to intercept them, his smile frozen. "Harper, darling, you shouldn't be here—"
Harper stepped up to the microphone. The room went silent.
"My name is Harper Quinn," she announced, her voice projected clearly. "I am a nurse. I am a mother. And for the last three years, I have been a prisoner of the Caldwell family. Today, the prison doors are open."
She signaled to Elias. He uploaded the files to the massive screen behind them.
Financial records. Emails detailing the theft of the patents. Proof of the poisoning attempts on her pregnancy (which had been intercepted by Elias’s contacts).

The room gasped.
Marissa, in the front row, dropped her champagne glass. It shattered, the sound echoing through the ballroom.
