Chapter 3 - The Midnight Intruder

The penthouse suite atop the Moretti Tower was a fortress of glass, steel, and absolute security. Bulletproof windows overlooked the glittering skyline of Chicago, and private security guards patrolled the corridors twenty-four hours a day.
It was 2:15 AM.
Claire lay perfectly still in the massive king-sized bed, her breathing slow and even. Beside her, Adrian slept soundly—or so he pretended. His arm was draped heavily across her waist, a subconscious anchor to ensure she couldn't leave the bed without waking him.
For three hours, Claire had listened to his breathing shift from deep REM sleep to the shallow, rhythmic cadence of someone feigning unconsciousness.
He was testing her.
Slowly, with infinite patience, Claire lifted Adrian’s heavy arm and slid out from beneath it. She didn't make a sound. Her bare feet touched the plush wool carpet as she crept across the darkened bedroom toward the ensuite bathroom, leaving the door cracked an inch.
She needed to check the backup upload on her satellite-linked tablet hidden inside her vanity case.
As she reached the vanity, a floorboard beneath the rug gave a microscopic creak.
Instantly, the bedsheets rustled.
A heavy shadow detached itself from the darkness of the bedroom, moving with terrifying speed. Before Claire could turn around, a large, warm hand clamped firmly over her mouth, and an arm banded around her waist, dragging her backward against a hard, muscular chest.
“Going somewhere, beautiful?” Adrian’s voice whispered directly into her ear, sending a shiver of cold dread down her spine.
He smelled of expensive cologne, scotch, and raw danger.
Claire didn't scream. She didn't thrash. She went completely limp in his arms, playing the part of the terrified, helpless blind girl caught in a nightmare.
“Adrian... please,” she whimpered, letting her voice tremble with manufactured fear. “I... I just needed water. I had a nightmare about the accident.”
Adrian slowly loosened his grip, turning her around to face him in the dim moonlight filtering through the bulletproof glass. He reached out, his thumb tracing the line of her jawline with a terrifying gentleness.
“A nightmare,” Adrian repeated softly. “Or were you checking your little gadgets?”
“What gadgets?” Claire asked, her voice hitching.
Adrian leaned down, his face inches from hers. His eyes burned with a dark, manic intensity. “I know you can see, Claire. I saw the way you poured your tea tonight without spilling a drop. I saw the way your eyes tracked my movement across the room when you thought my back was turned. You’ve been faking it.”
The mask could stay on no longer.
Claire stopped trembling. Her body stiffened, her posture straightening into an unyielding steel rod. She lifted her chin, dropping the trembling, pathetic voice entirely.
When she spoke, her tone was cold, steady, and filled with a venom that made Adrian recoil by a fraction of an inch.
“And what if I can?” Claire whispered back, her eyes boring straight into his soul. “What are you going to do, Adrian? Kill me? Go ahead. But remember—if I die tonight, an encrypted package containing every medical record, police bribe receipt, and confession recording of how you and Vanessa blinded me goes straight to the U.S. Attorney General and every major news outlet in the country. Your family’s empire would collapse before breakfast.”
Adrian stared at her as if he were seeing a ghost. The submissive, gentle woman he had manipulated for three years was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating strategist who had outmaneuvered him in his own game.
A dark, dangerous chuckle escaped Adrian’s throat. He didn't look scared; he looked fascinated.
“God, you are breathtaking,” Adrian murmured, his fingers tightening around her arm. “You think you can beat us? You think a few audio files can bring down the Moretti syndicate? We own judges, senators, and police chiefs in this city, Claire.”
“Then why are you shaking?” Claire asked smoothly, pointing down at his hand gripping her wrist.
Adrian’s smile vanished.
“You’re marrying me in forty-eight hours, Claire,” Adrian whispered, his voice dropping into a lethal ultimatum. “And you will walk down that aisle, smile for the cameras, and say your vows. Because if you don't... your parents, your precious little life, and everyone who ever helped you will disappear before the ink on the marriage license dries.”
He let go of her wrist, turned around, and walked back into the darkness of the bedroom, leaving her standing alone in the moonlight.
Claire rubbed her wrist, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her resolve had never been stronger.
