Chapter 6 - The Final Vow

The grand organ of Holy Name Cathedral reverberated through the soaring gothic arches, filling the cavernous space with a solemn, thunderous melody. Outside, the blizzard howled against the stained-glass windows, casting multicolored shadows across the hundreds of elite guests seated in the pews—politicians, syndicate capos, high-society figures, and federal agents working undercover as ushers and photographers.

At the altar stood Adrian Moretti, his posture rigid, his dark eyes fixed on the heavy oak doors at the back of the nave. Beside him stood Vanessa, bruised and humiliated from the night before, wearing a murderous scowl beneath her bridesmaid veil.

The heavy oak doors slowly swung open.

A collective gasp rippled through the congregation.

There was no white cane. There was no hesitation.

Claire Bennett walked down the grand aisle alone, her head held high, her posture unyielding as marble. Her clear, ice-blue eyes scanned the congregation, locking eyes with corrupt judges, bribed politicians, and terrified family members who shrank back from her gaze. She moved with absolute grace and terrifying confidence, every step a declaration of war.

At the front of the altar, Adrian stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat. He realized too late that he wasn't marrying a victim. He was walking into an execution chamber.

Claire reached the altar, stopping directly beside Adrian.

The elderly priest cleared his throat nervously, opening his leather-bound Bible, unaware of the explosive tension humming in the air.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today...”

The service proceeded in a surreal, suffocating haze. When it came time for the vows, Adrian stared down at Claire, his voice tight and trembling as he slipped the heavy diamond band onto her finger.

“I, Adrian, take you, Claire, to be my lawful wedded wife, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health...”

His eyes begged her silently not to detonate the bomb.

Then it was her turn. Claire took the ring from the velvet cushion. She slid it onto Adrian’s finger, her touch light as a ghost’s.

“I, Claire,” she spoke clearly, her voice echoing through the cathedral’s sound system with crystal-clear precision, “take you, Adrian Moretti, to be my lawfully wedded... target.”

A startled murmur erupted through the pews.

Adrian flinched. “Claire, stop—”

Before he could finish, the heavy front doors of the cathedral burst open with a deafening crash.

A blizzard of swirling snow blew inside, followed not by wedding guests, but by dozens of federal agents in tactical gear, led by the FBI’s Director of Organized Crime Enforcement, alongside state police and digital forensics units holding federal warrants.

“FBI! Nobody move!” the lead agent roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Chaos erupted instantly. Syndicate bodyguards reached for their suit jackets, but before they could draw their weapons, red laser sights painted their chests from a dozen different angles.

“Stay down! Hands on your heads!”

Salvatore Moretti leaped to his feet in the front pew, his face purple with rage. “What is the meaning of this?! We are respected citizens! This is a private ceremony!”

“It’s a federal roundup, Mr. Moretti,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the aisle.

Marcus Vance, the lead federal prosecutor, walked forward down the aisle, holding a thick leather briefcase. He stopped directly at the base of the altar, looking up at Adrian and Salvatore.

“Adrian Moretti, Salvatore Moretti, and associated conspirators,” Marcus announced loudly, reading from an arrest warrant. “You are hereby charged with racketeering, corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, bribery, and the premeditated attempted murder of Claire Bennett through vehicular assault and synthetic poisoning.”

Vanessa screamed, attempting to bolt down the side aisle, but two federal agents intercepted her instantly, slamming her wrists into steel handcuffs.

Eleanor and Richard Bennett buried their faces in their hands in the front row as federal marshals snapped cuffs around their wrists as well, escorting them out of the cathedral in disgrace.

Adrian stood frozen at the altar, staring at Claire with a mixture of profound shock and twisted admiration.

“You planned this all along,” Adrian whispered, his voice barely audible over the chaos.

Claire turned to face him, adjusting the veil back from her face. Her eyes shone with the brilliant, untamed light of a woman who had fought her way out of hell and reclaimed her life.

“You thought three years of darkness would break me, Adrian,” Claire replied softly, her voice steady and lethal. “You forgot that in the dark, my other senses learned how to listen, how to record, and how to wait.”

Two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Adrian by both arms. He didn't resist. He simply stared at his bride as they slapped heavy steel cuffs around his wrists and hauled him down the very same aisle where he had planned to trap her forever.

As the heavy oak doors closed behind the last of the Moretti family, sealing their fate inside federal custody, Claire turned around.

The snowstorm outside had finally begun to clear, and through the stained-glass windows of the cathedral, a brilliant, blinding beam of golden sunlight broke through the clouds, illuminating the altar—and the rest of her life.
