Chapter 4 - The Bachelorette Trap

The bachelorette party was held at a private, members-only lounge tucked away in Chicago’s River North district—a smoky, dimly lit den of excess where elite socialites and high-society women pretended their husbands weren't running criminal empires.
Vanessa Reed had organized the entire night, sparing no expense. Champagne flowed like water, and the music thudded through the velvet-draped walls.
Claire sat in a plush leather booth in the corner, wearing a simple black silk dress and her signature dark sunglasses. Around her, several young women she had known since childhood chattered excitedly about wedding details, honeymoon destinations, and registry gifts.
Vanessa sat directly across from her, holding a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon, her smile gleaming with malicious triumph.
“Well, toast to the bride!” Vanessa announced loudly, raising her glass. “To Claire! Who miraculously survived the darkest three years of her life, and is now marrying the most powerful man in Chicago!”
Everyone cheered and drank.
Vanessa leaned across the table, her eyes glinting with a spiteful sparkle. She lowered her voice so only Claire could hear over the heavy bass of the music.
“Enjoy your little game while it lasts, Claire,” Vanessa whispered, her fingernails tapping rhythmically against the glass. “Adrian might be playing nice because of your little threats, but tonight... tonight is your bachelorette party. And accidents happen so easily when people drink too much.”
Claire took a slow sip of her sparkling water, never breaking eye contact with her former friend. “Is that a threat, Vanessa?”
“It’s a prediction,” Vanessa smiled sweetly. “Just wait until the special bridal cocktail arrives.”
Ten minutes later, a waiter in a crisp white tuxedo jacket approached their booth, carrying a silver tray with a single, elaborately garnished martini glass filled with a deep crimson liquid.
“Compliments of the gentleman at the bar, Miss Bennett,” the waiter said smoothly, setting the glass down directly in front of Claire.
Vanessa’s eyes locked onto the glass with predatory satisfaction. “Oh, how romantic! You have to drink it, Claire. It’s tradition!”
Claire looked down at the crimson liquid. Her nose caught the faint, unmistakable scent of almond extract—potassium cyanide or a fast-acting synthetic paralytic. They weren't just planning to trap her; they were planning to eliminate her before the wedding could even take place, staging it as a tragic alcohol overdose.
She looked up at Vanessa, letting out a soft, pitying sigh.
“You know, Vanessa,” Claire said, her voice carrying easily over the table noise, “it’s amazing how predictable you are.”
Vanessa blinked, her smile faltering. “What are you talking about?”
Before Vanessa could react, Claire reached out, grabbed the stem of the martini glass, and pushed it across the table directly into Vanessa’s lap.
The crimson liquid splashed violently across Vanessa’s expensive ivory silk dress, staining the fabric a deep, lurid red.
Vanessa shrieked, jumping up from the booth and knocking her chair backward. “Are you out of your mind?!” she screamed, frantically brushing at the wet fabric.
The entire table went dead silent. The music seemed to fade into the background as all eyes turned toward them.
Claire stood up slowly, her tall, elegant frame towering over Vanessa. She reached up, slowly removing her dark sunglasses for the first time in public in three years.
Her clear, piercing, ice-blue eyes locked onto Vanessa’s face with a clarity and focus that made the other woman stumble backward in sheer, unadulterated terror.
“Oops,” Claire said, her voice dripping with sweet, lethal sarcasm. “My hand slipped. But don't worry, Vanessa—you always did look better in red.”

Without waiting for a response, Claire turned around, grabbed her designer handbag, and walked out of the lounge, leaving Vanessa shaking like a leaf in front of a room full of stunned socialites.
The mask was off. The war had officially begun.
