Chapter 2 - The Safe HavenMy father’s house smelled of coffee, cedarwood, and old paper.

When I pulled into the driveway at midnight, the porch light flickered on immediately. Dad was awake. He was always awake when something felt wrong. By the time I walked up the steps, he was standing at the open door with a mug of black coffee in his hand, his eyes scanning me instantly for injuries.

"Claire?" he asked, his voice sharp and alert. "What happened?"

"He swung," I said quietly as I stepped inside the warmth of the hallway. "And he missed."

Dad didn't panic, and he didn't yell. A dark, cold shadow crossed his features—the same expression I had seen when veteran police officers came to him seeking advice on dangerous suspects. He closed the door, locked it twice, and led me into the kitchen.

"Sit down," he said, handing me a glass of water. "Tell me everything."

For the next hour, I told him about the control, the subtle isolation, the hidden folder, Melissa’s photographs, and the confrontation in the kitchen. When I described Daniel sprawled on the floor, a grim, tight smile touched the corner of my father's mouth.

"You used the center-line collapse technique," Dad noted quietly.

"Dad, he’s going to come after me legally," I said, the adrenaline finally wearing off, leaving a heavy weight in my chest. "He has money, connections, and a reputation to protect. He’s going to claim I assaulted him."

Dad set his mug down on the kitchen table and looked at me with absolute, unshakeable certainty.

"Let him try," Dad said. "For twenty-seven years, I trained cops how to handle violent predators. Daniel Mercer is a coward in a tailored suit. And more importantly, you have documentation. Let’s call Marcus."

Marcus Vance was my father’s former student, now a top-tier criminal defense and civil rights attorney in the city. Within twenty minutes, my phone was ringing, and a new legal battle officially began.
