Chapter 4 - The EscalationDaniel didn't go quietly.

Two days after the filing, I received an anonymous package at my father’s house. Inside was a single photograph of my car parked in the driveway, with a printed note: You think you can ruin me? This is only the beginning.

When Dad saw the photo, his jaw tightened into a hard line of granite. He didn't yell, but the air in the room grew heavy.

"He's panicking," Dad said. "Panicked men make mistakes."

Sure enough, Marcus called us an hour later with incredible news. Desperate to salvage his reputation and stop the financial audit of his hidden corporate accounts, Daniel had tried to bribe one of the junior clerks at the courthouse to suppress Melissa’s original 6-year-old restraining order file.

The clerk had recorded the conversation and reported it directly to the district attorney.

"Tampering with court records is a federal felony," Marcus said over speakerphone, his voice practically humming with satisfaction. "Daniel just turned a nasty divorce into a criminal indictment. The D.A. is issuing an arrest warrant for him as we speak."

That evening, as twilight settled over the quiet suburban neighborhood, a news alert flashed on the television.

“Prominent corporate consultant Daniel Mercer has been taken into custody by federal authorities tonight following an investigation into financial fraud, judicial tampering, and domestic intimidation...”

The footage showed Daniel being led out of his corporate office in handcuffs, his expensive suit wrinkled, his head ducked low to avoid the camera flash. The man who had once stood in our kitchen, casually raising his hand to strike me, looked entirely hollowed out.
