Chapter 3 - The Counter-StrikeBy morning, Daniel had recovered enough pride to act.

He didn't call the police immediately. Instead, he tried a different tactic: total psychological warfare. My phone buzzed continuously with text messages from him—first pleading that it was all a misunderstanding, then demanding I come home, and finally threatening to cut off all financial access and file for abandonment and spousal assault.

I handed my phone to Marcus, who had arrived at my father’s house by 8:00 AM with a briefcase full of preliminary paperwork.

"He's trying to manufacture a narrative," Marcus said, scrolling through the text logs on his tablet. "If he files a police report claiming domestic assault after we file for a restraining order and present Melissa’s records, it looks like retaliation. But we need to move fast before he scrubs his digital footprint."

"He won't be able to scrub the server logs," Dad added, pacing near the window. "When Daniel worked at Sterling Financial three years ago, he was investigated for financial manipulation of client accounts. I kept copies of those internal memos in my safe just in case his true character ever surfaced."

I stared at my father in astonishment. "You knew about him?"

"I knew he was arrogant and slick," Dad admitted. "I didn't know he was violent. If I had, I would have broken his nose the day he asked for your hand."

Armed with the digital files from Daniel's laptop, Melissa’s historical court restraining order, and the financial irregularities from his past employer, Marcus filed an emergency civil protection order alongside a petition for divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty and hidden asset misappropriation.

When Daniel was served with the papers at his office later that afternoon by two federal marshals, the shock wave destroyed his afternoon board meeting. He thought he was hunting me; instead, he realized he was the one trapped in the crosshairs.
