Chapter 4 - The Shadow Over GraybridgeBy four o'clock that afternoon, the Wolf estate had been transformed into a command center.

Dozens of armed men in sharp suits moved quietly through the marble hallways, checking tactical gear, calibrating encrypted radios, and monitoring live satellite feeds of the city. The tension in the air was palpable—a storm was brewing over Graybridge, and everyone knew that night would decide who ruled the city.
Norah sat in the estate's private medical lab, reviewing Gideon’s latest blood panel on a high-definition monitor.
His creatine kinase levels had dropped by seventy percent. His kidney function was recovering rapidly thanks to the continuous bicarbonate flush, and his cardiac rhythm had returned to a perfect, steady sinus pattern. Physically, he was out of danger, though his muscles would require several weeks of physical therapy to regain full strength.
The heavy glass door of the lab slid open.
Gideon walked in. He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal-grey three-piece suit, a dark silk tie, and a long wool coat draped over his broad shoulders. He walked with a slight cane, but his posture was imposing, radiating an aura of absolute dominance.
"You shouldn't be walking without assistance, Mr. Wolf," Norah said, standing up from her desk, her brow furrowing in disapproval. "Your quadriceps tissue suffered significant micro-tears from the myoglobin buildup."
"I have spent three weeks lying on my back, Norah," Gideon replied, stepping closer to her desk. "Tonight, I stand."
He looked at the digital monitors, then down at the files neatly organized on her desk.
"Arthur tells me you refused the executive suite in the west wing," Gideon noted, raising an eyebrow.
"I preferred staying near the lab," Norah said, adjusting her collar. "I wanted to monitor your blood work every two hours."
Gideon smiled, reaching out to gently touch her arm. His fingers slid down to wrap around her hand, pulling her slightly closer.
"You care about the work, or do you care about the patient?" he asked softly.
Norah looked up into his intense amber eyes, feeling her heart flutter against her ribs. She had spent her entire life being invisible, slipping through the background of other people's lives. But standing beside Gideon Wolf, she felt intensely seen, valued, and protected.
"Both," she admitted quietly.
Gideon’s expression softened, a deep warmth flooding his gaze. "After tonight, Victor Vane will no longer be a threat to this city. I want you to accompany me to the Grand Baltimore Hotel."
Norah gasped. "To the syndicate meeting? Gideon, that's dangerous! Vane’s men will be armed!"
"Vane’s men are mercenaries," Gideon said coolly. "They follow strength. When I walk into that ballroom alive, Vane’s authority will shatter instantly. But I want you beside me, Norah. I want the entire city to see the woman who saved Gideon Wolf."
Before she could answer, Arthur walked into the lab, his face pale, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.
"Boss," Arthur said, his voice laced with urgent gravity. "We have a problem. Vane didn't just invite the harbor captains to the Grand Baltimore Hotel tonight."
Gideon turned, his eyes narrowing. "Who else did he invite?"
"The Federal Regional Director for Homeland Security," Arthur revealed, turning the tablet screen toward Gideon. "Vane filed an official emergency petition claiming that your 'disappearance' has left the harbor vulnerable to foreign smuggling syndicates. He’s planning to hand over control of Pier 19 to federal authorities in exchange for absolute immunity and exclusive operating licenses."
Gideon’s jaw set into an icy, terrifying line.
"He isn't just trying to take my territory," Gideon whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "He’s trying to sell the entire city to federal oversight to protect his own skin."

He looked at Norah, taking her hand in a firm, unyielding grip.
"Get your coat, Norah," Gideon ordered softly. "It's time to end this."
