Chapter 5 - The Grand Baltimore HotelThe Crystal Ballroom of the Grand Baltimore Hotel was the pinnacle of old-money luxury.

Massive gold chandeliers hung from gilded ceilings, casting brilliant light across five hundred guests. The room was filled with the elite of Graybridge—shipping magnates, city council members, police chiefs, and foreign trade representatives. Surrounding the perimeter were dozens of security guards wearing black tactical vests, all loyal to Victor Vane.

At the center of the main stage stood Victor Vane.

He was a broad, arrogant man in his late fifties, wearing a white tuxedo with a red carnation pinned to his lapel. He held a glass of expensive champagne, speaking loudly into the stage microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Vane’s voice boomed across the crowded ballroom. "Tonight marks a historic transition for Graybridge! For fifteen years, our harbors have been controlled by the shadowy, unpredictable reign of Gideon Wolf!"

A quiet murmur ran through the crowd.

"But as many of you know," Vane continued, a triumphant sneer curling his lips, "Mr. Wolf has fallen gravely ill. In fact, reliable sources confirm he will not survive the week."

In the front row, Regional Director Thomas of Homeland Security adjusted his tie, nodding approvingly alongside three high-ranking city officials.

"Therefore," Vane declared, raising his glass, "under the Municipal Logistics Emergency Act, I am officially assuming control of Pier 19 and the eastern freight yards! We are ushering in a new era of security, stability, and—"

CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.

The heavy double mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The booming sound of a silver-tipped walking cane striking the polished marble floor echoed through the silent hall.

Every single person in the room turned around.

Standing in the doorway, framed by six massive, armed bodyguards led by Arthur Finch, was Gideon Wolf.

He looked magnificent. His charcoal-grey suit fit his imposing frame perfectly, his amber eyes blazing with an terrifying, regal power that swept across the room like a blizzard.

Walking beside him, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, was Norah Blake. She wore an exquisite, floor-length dark emerald silk gown, her diamond necklace sparkling under the chandeliers, her posture radiating quiet, absolute confidence.

The entire ballroom dropped into a breathless, terrifying silence.

Victor Vane dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the stage floor, sparkling wine splashing across his white leather shoes.

"Impossible..." Vane whispered, his face turning as white as a sheet. "You're... you're supposed to be dead!"

Gideon walked down the center aisle, his slow, deliberate steps carrying an overwhelming aura of authority. The crowd parted instantly, people backing away in awe and terror.

"I apologize for the disappointment, Victor," Gideon said, his deep, raspy voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated."

Gideon reached the front of the stage, stopping three feet from Regional Director Thomas.

"Director Thomas," Gideon said politely, inclining his head. "I believe Mr. Vane was about to hand over logistics contracts that he has no legal or physical right to possess."

"Gideon..." Director Thomas stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "We were told you were incapacitated!"

"I was recovering from an attempted assassination," Gideon stated clearly, his eyes flicking up to Victor Vane on the stage. "An assassination executed via a chemical toxicity scheme engineered by Victor Vane and a former member of my kitchen staff."

Vane panicked. "He’s lying! He has no proof! Security, clear the room! Arrest him!"

Not a single security guard moved.

Arthur Finch stepped forward, pulling a heavy silver flash drive from his pocket and handing it directly to Director Thomas.

"On that drive, Director," Arthur announced loudly, "are encrypted audio recordings, bank transfer records from the Cayman Islands, and a full confession from Chef Paul Renner, detailing how Victor Vane paid two hundred thousand dollars to poison Gideon Wolf's daily medication."

Director Thomas opened the file on his tablet. His eyes widened in horror as he scrolled through the undeniable, rock-solid evidence.

"This is legitimate..." Thomas gasped, turning to stare at Vane.

Norah stepped forward, her clear, calm voice resonating across the hall.

"As Chief Medical Officer of the Wolf Estate," Norah said, looking straight at the news cameras positioned near the stage, "I personally identified the chemical mechanism used in the attempt. The forensic toxicology reports have already been filed with the State Attorney General's office."

Victor Vane backed away, his hands shaking violently as he looked around the room. His captains were backing away from him; his guards were lowering their weapons; his political allies were turning their backs.

Within seconds, four federal agents stepped up onto the stage, drawing their handcuffs.

"Victor Vane," Director Thomas declared sternly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, and treasonous conspiracy."

As the agents slammed Vane onto the stage floor, handcuffing him in front of the entire city elite, Vane screamed furiously toward Gideon.

"Who told you?!" Vane shrieked, his face pressed against the carpet. "Who found the citrus extract?! My chemist said it was undetectable!"

Gideon walked up to the edge of the stage. He reached down, took Norah’s hand, and pulled her up beside him, wrapping his arm around her waist.

Gideon looked down at the ruined traitor with supreme contempt.

"You spent millions on chemists, mercenaries, and politicians, Victor," Gideon said softly, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. "But you forgot that the smartest person in Graybridge was the maid you overlooked."
