Chapter 6 - A New Foundation

Three months later, the New York autumn was in full swing, turning the trees in Central Park into brilliant shades of amber and gold.

The Rossi estate was quieter now. The armed guards at the gates were fewer, the tension in the hallways had evaporated, and the dark cloud that had hung over the family for years was completely gone. Leo Rossi was fully recovered, traveling abroad on legitimate business, and the syndicate was transitioning its capital out of the shadows and into clean, legal infrastructure.

I sat at a sleek glass-and-steel desk on the thirty-fifth floor of Rossi Global’s new Midtown headquarters, reviewing a digital portfolio of clean energy acquisitions.

The double doors opened silently, and Dominic walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. He set one on my desk and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the sprawling Manhattan skyline.

"Auditors just signed off on the Q3 fiscal transition," Dominic noted, taking a sip of his coffee. "Not a single discrepancy. Not a single bad invoice. You've built a fortress out of spreadsheets, kid."

"Fortresses are easy to build when you know where the weak stones are," I replied, spinning my desk chair around to face him.

Dominic smiled—a rare, genuine expression that made him look ten years younger. "You know, your uncle in Bayonne would probably be proud. Turning old clockmaker tricks and vinegar into a corporate empire."

"He always said the best way to clean a dirty house wasn't with a bigger broom," I said, looking down at the gleaming glass floor beneath my feet. "It was by turning on the lights."

Dominic raised his coffee cup in a quiet, respectful toast.

"Here’s to the lights, then," he said.

I raised my cup to meet his, knowing that while the underworld never truly sleeps, for the first time in a very long time, the house was finally clean.
