Chapter 2 - The Inner Circle’s TreacheryBy dawn, the Falcone estate was locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary. No one entered; no one left. The digital surveillance systems, the private communication lines, and the security patrols were placed under Carmine’s direct, unyielding oversight.

Elena was given a quiet, secure room on the third floor—far away from the basement quarters she had shared with the cleaning staff. She was provided with a fresh wardrobe, high-end tools, and access to the estate's administrative archives. But luxury meant nothing compared to the danger surrounding them. Gabriel knew that Salvatore would realize his plot had failed the moment he discovered Gabriel was stabilizing instead of dying.
At noon, Salvatore arrived at the iron front gates, looking immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by two armed bodyguards and a briefcase full of quarterly financial reports. He wore a mask of solemn, grieving concern as he stepped into the foyer.
"Carmine," Salvatore said, holding out a hand that slightly trembled. "I heard the terrible news about Gabriel's sudden worsening overnight. We need to prepare for the transition—"
"He's awake, Salvatore," Carmine interrupted flatly, not taking the offered hand.
Salvatore froze, his polite smile twitching. "Awake? But Dr. Cole said—"
"Dr. Cole was dismissed for incompetence and attempted murder," a cold voice echoed from the grand staircase.
Salvatore looked up. Gabriel stood at the top of the marble steps. He was dressed in a crisp black shirt and trousers, his left arm resting comfortably in a sling, but his posture was upright, commanding, and radiating absolute power. The fever was gone. The deathly pallor had vanished.
For a terrifying second, all color drained from Salvatore’s face. He recovered quickly, forcing a laugh that sounded hollow and strained. "Gabriel! Thank God... we all thought the worst. Who managed to pull you back?"
Gabriel walked slowly down the stairs, stopping just three steps above Salvatore. Elena stood quietly in the shadows behind him, holding a leather-bound folio containing the chemical analysis report of the industrial threads.
"A very observant young woman," Gabriel said smoothly. "She noticed something in my shoulder that was deliberately planted there to rot me from the inside out. Tell me, cousin... how is the textile import division performing this quarter? Did we happen to purchase any industrial-grade upholstery cord recently through our shell companies?"
Salvatore’s eyes darted toward Carmine, then back to Gabriel. He realized instantly that the game was up. The facade dropped, replaced by a cold, desperate sneer.
"You were supposed to die quietly, Gabriel," Salvatore spat, stepping back as his bodyguards instinctively reached for their weapons. "You've grown soft, relying on old alliances while the families in Brooklyn and Queens laugh behind your back. I built the modern logistics network while you bled on the streets!"
Before Salvatore could finish his sentence, Carmine’s gun was pressed firmly against the center of Salvatore’s forehead, while six hidden perimeter guards stepped out from the shadows, their weapons leveled at Salvatore’s men.
"Drop the iron," Carmine growled.

Salvatore’s bodyguards immediately raised their hands and let their weapons hit the marble floor.
Gabriel looked down at his cousin with a chilling, expressionless stare. "Lock him in the lower vault. We have a lot of financial restructuring to discuss—starting with every asset he tried to siphon while he thought I was dying."
