Chapter 4 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering gold, crystal chandeliers, and high-society arrogance.
Over five hundred of the city's most powerful elites were gathered for the Metropolitan Gala. Among them were Arthur Brennan and his daughters, Tatiana and Chloe.
Tatiana was dressed in a golden sequined gown, holding a glass of champagne, holding court near the central fountain. She was smiling, but beneath her makeup, her face was tense.
Arthur stood nearby, pale and constantly checking his phone.
"Dad, stop fidgeting," Tatiana hissed under her breath. "You're embarrassing us. What's wrong with you tonight?"
"Something is wrong, Tati," Arthur whispered frantically, his voice shaking. "Mr. Moretti left the party last night and canceled our meeting today. His secretary won't take my calls! If he doesn't sign the merger, our creditors will demand fifty million dollars by midnight!"
"Relax," Chloe chimed in, adjusting her pink pearl necklace. "Moretti is just playing hard to get. Who else is he going to partner with? We're the Brennans! We own this city."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open.
The master of ceremonies stepped forward, his voice echoing through the massive loudspeaker.
"Announcing... Mr. Dante Moretti. And his guest, Miss Marisol Vega."
The entire ballroom fell into an instantaneous, breathless silence.
Conversations stopped mid-sentence. Glasses were lowered. All eyes turned toward the entrance.
Dante Moretti stepped into the room. He looked devastatingly handsome in a black tuxedo, his tall, broad frame radiating absolute dominance.
But it was not Dante that made the crowd gasp.
Arm in arm with the feared crime lord was a woman of such staggering, breathtaking beauty that she looked like a goddess descended from the heavens. Her midnight-blue dress sparkled like the night sky, her diamond-and-sapphire necklace blinding beneath the chandeliers. She walked with a regal, effortless grace, her head held high, gray eyes cool and unreadable.
Tatiana’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers.
CRASH!
The crystal glass shattered against the marble floor, but no one looked at her.
Tatiana stared at the woman beside Dante, her blood running instantly cold. Her jaw dropped in absolute, horror-filled shock.
"No..." Tatiana choked out, her face draining of all color. "No... it... it can't be..."
Chloe’s eyes bulged out of her head. "Tati... isn't that... isn't that the waitress?!"
"Shut up!" Tatiana screamed in a terrified whisper. "That's impossible! She was a servant! She was soaked in a pool yesterday!"
Arthur Brennan stared at Marisol, then looked at the forty-carat royal sapphire around her neck—a piece of jewelry worth more than his entire family estate. Panic, cold and absolute, gripped his heart.
Dante guided Marisol smoothly down the grand staircase into the center of the ballroom. The crowd parted like the Red Sea, bowing their heads slightly as Dante passed.
Marisol walked with absolute composure. She could feel the hundreds of eyes on her, could hear the hushed, stunned whispers echoing through the room.
"Who is she?" "She’s wearing the Star of Venice!" "Is she a European princess?" "She’s with Moretti!"
Dante leaned down, his arm tight around Marisol’s waist, pulling her close against his side. "Look at them," he murmured smoothly into her ear. "They are bowing to you."
Marisol’s gaze swept across the room until it locked onto the Brennan family.
Tatiana, Chloe, and Arthur stood frozen near the fountain, looking as though they had just seen a ghost.
Marisol smiled—a faint, slow, devastatingly beautiful smile.
Dante guided her straight toward the trembling family.
As they approached, Arthur Brennan looked like he was about to faint. He bowed frantically, his voice trembling violently. "M-Mr. Moretti! Sir! What a... what an honor to see you tonight!"
Dante didn't even acknowledge Arthur. His icy grey eyes remained locked on Tatiana and Chloe, who were trembling under his lethal gaze.
"Good evening, Arthur," Dante said, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "I believe you know my companion?"
Tatiana swallowed hard, her knees shaking so violently she had to hold onto Chloe’s shoulder. "I... I..."
Marisol stepped forward, her midnight-blue dress rustling softly. She looked down at Tatiana with gray eyes that held no anger, no bitterness—only pure, absolute superiority.
"Good evening, Miss Brennan," Marisol spoke, her voice clear, rich, and musical, carrying across the quieted crowd nearby. "I believe the last time we spoke, you were concerned about the quality of the service."
Tatiana’s eyes welled with terrified tears. "You... you were the..."
"Marisol Vega," Marisol introduced herself smoothly, offering a soft, cold smile. "And yes, Miss Brennan. The pool water was quite chilly yesterday. But as you can see... I recover quickly."
Gasps erupted from the surrounding guests who overheard the exchange.
Arthur Brennan turned to his daughter, horror filling his face. "Tati... what is she talking about?! What pool?!"
Before Tatiana could answer, the heavy double doors at the side of the ballroom opened, and five men in sharp grey suits walked in, led by Leo, Dante’s chief of security. Behind them were three federal marshals.
The crowd murmured in confusion as the marshals walked straight toward Arthur Brennan.
"Arthur Brennan?" the lead marshal announced loudly, pulling an official document from his coat. "We have a court order for the immediate seizure of all assets belonging to Brennan Logistics."
Arthur’s eyes bulged. "WHAT?! On what grounds?!"
"Fraud, massive tax evasion, and illegal harbor racketeering," the marshal declared coldly. "Your bank accounts have been frozen. Your ships are being impounded at the docks as we speak. The Brennan estate is under federal foreclosure."
"NO!" Arthur screamed, clutching his chest. "This is a mistake! I have three hundred and ten million dollars!"
"You had three hundred and ten million dollars, Arthur," Dante interjected smoothly, taking a champagne flute from a passing waiter and handing it gently to Marisol. "Until two hours ago. When I purchased your company's entire debt from the Central Bank for twelve cents on the dollar."
Arthur collapsed onto his knees on the velvet carpet, weeping openly. "You... you destroyed me..."
Dante looked down at the ruined billionaire, then turned his gaze onto Tatiana and Chloe, who were sobbing in terror, their high-society lives ending in a single, brutal moment.
"You pushed the wrong woman into the pool, Miss Brennan," Dante whispered softly, so only the sisters could hear. "In my world, when you touch something that belongs to Dante Moretti... you burn."
Dante turned to Marisol, placing his hand gently on the small of her back.
"Shall we dance, my love?" Dante asked softly, his eyes filled with pure warmth.
Marisol looked at the ruined Brennan family, then up at the magnificent man standing beside her. The weight of her past, her poverty, her suffering—it all vanished into the golden light of the ballroom.
"I would love to dance," Marisol whispered.
May you like
Dante led her into the center of the dance floor as the orchestra began to play a sweeping, magnificent waltz. He swept her into his arms, spinning her smoothly across the floor, her midnight-blue gown swirling like a starry galaxy beneath the crystal lights.
The entire ballroom watched in awe as the Mafia Boss and the former waitress danced over the ashes of their enemies.
