Chapter 5 - The Shattered Glass

A month after the Metropolitan Gala, the city’s newspapers were dominated by a single story: THE COLLAPSE OF THE BRENNAN EMPIRE.

The Brennan estate had been auctioned off on the courthouse steps. Arthur Brennan was facing twenty years in federal prison for financial fraud. Tatiana and Chloe, stripped of their trusts, clothes, and high-society status, had been forced to move into a tiny, rundown two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, working minimum-wage retail jobs to pay for their father’s legal fees.

Meanwhile, in the grand sky penthouse of the Moretti Tower, life had transformed completely.

Camila was thriving. Thanks to Dr. Chen’s daily physical therapy and advanced nerve treatments, she was already walking short distances without her walker, her smile brighter than it had ever been. She was enrolled in a prestigious university, her entire tuition fully paid by Dante.

Marisol had officially taken over as the Director of the Vega Foundation—a hundred-million-dollar charitable foundation established by Dante, dedicated to providing medical care and housing for low-income workers and servers across the city.

She was no longer a victim. She was a beacon of hope.

It was a quiet Friday evening.

Marisol sat on the private balcony of the penthouse, wrapped in a plush cream cardigan, sipping hot tea as she watched the sun set over the glowing skyline.

Footsteps sounded behind her.

Dante walked out onto the balcony. He was dressed in a simple black shirt, his dark hair soft and windblown. He stood behind her, wrapping his massive, warm arms around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

Marisol leaned back against his broad chest, letting out a soft, contented sigh. "You're home early."

"I missed my foundation director," Dante murmured into her neck, pressing a soft kiss to her skin that made her pulse flutter. "How was your day?"

"Wonderful," Marisol smiled, turning slightly in his arms. "We approved funding for twenty new surgeries today for families who couldn't afford insurance. Real people, Dante. People like me and Camila."

Dante looked down at her, his icy grey eyes softened by a deep, profound love that still amazed Marisol every single day.

"There is no one like you, Marisol," Dante whispered, his hand gently stroking her cheek.

Marisol lowered her head slightly, a small shadow of doubt touching her face. "Dante... sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night thinking this is a dream. I worry that one day I’ll wake up back in that cold water, hearing them laugh."

Dante gently took her jaw in his hand, lifting her face so her gray eyes had to meet his.

"Look at me, Marisol," Dante commanded softly, yet with absolute authority. "The Brennans are gone. Your old life is gone. You will never shiver in the cold again. You will never have to count pennies for medicine. I swore an oath the night I found you in the rain, and I will keep it until the day I die."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Marisol’s breath hitched.

Dante dropped slowly onto one knee on the marble balcony floor.

The feared Mafia Kingmaker—a man who bowed to no king, no government, no law—knelt before the former waitress, looking up at her with pure, unadulterated devotion.

He opened the velvet box.

Inside rested a magnificent ring—a flawless, rare pink diamond set in platinum, glittering like a rising sun.

"Marisol Vega," Dante spoke, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You came into my dark, violent world and brought light where there was only shadow. You showed me honor, grace, and a love I never thought I deserved. I don't want you to just be under my protection. I want you to be my wife. My equal. My queen."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy welled in Marisol’s eyes, spilling over her flushed cheeks.

"Will you marry me?" Dante asked softly.

Marisol didn't hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

May you like

"Yes!" she sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside him on the balcony floor. "Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!"

Dante slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into a fierce, passionate kiss, lifting her against his chest as the setting sun bathed them in a warm, golden glow.
