Chapter 2 - The $90 Million EchoSix weeks passed.

Laura’s treatment progressed with surprisingly positive results. Her oncologist reported that the tumor was shrinking faster than anticipated, and her strength was slowly returning. Valeria remained by her side through every milestone, sleeping on the uncomfortable hospital cot, bringing homemade soup prepared by Laura's mother, and ensuring her stepmother never felt abandoned.
Meanwhile, Richard had erased Laura from his life with ruthless speed. He finalized the divorce, moved Chloe into the suburban house, and threw lavish parties to celebrate his "new beginning." But Richard’s financial reality was far less glamorous than his lifestyle suggested. His mid-tier consulting firm was bleeding money, his debts were mounting, and Chloe’s appetite for luxury designer goods was quickly draining what little liquid capital he had left.
Then, on a rainy Tuesday morning, the financial world of Chicago was rocked by a massive corporate announcement.
Vance-Global Logistics, an international shipping conglomerate that had remained privately held for over four decades, announced the sudden passing of its enigmatic founder, Arthur Vance—Laura’s estranged maternal uncle. Having lived as a reclusive bachelor in Europe for thirty years, Arthur had died without immediate surviving children.
When the probate court opened the sealed master trust, the headline hit the financial journals: Sole Beneficiary Named for $90 Million Estate.
The news spread through Chicago's business circles like wildfire. Richard was sitting in his corner office, staring at an overdue mortgage notice, when his phone rang. It was his firm's senior partner, practically yelling into the receiver.
"Richard! Is it true? Your wife—your ex-wife—just inherited the entire Vance maritime trust! Ninety million dollars in liquid assets, stock portfolios, and prime commercial real estate!"
Richard dropped his coffee mug. It shattered on the carpet, dark liquid pooling around his leather shoes.
"Ninety... million?" Richard stammered, his mind racing.

He recalled the terms of their quick divorce. Laura had taken her modest personal savings, but in his rush to push her out, he had signed standard broad-form release waivers. However, his greed immediately overrode logic. He convinced himself that because they were technically married when Arthur Vance died, he had a legitimate claim—or better yet, he could manipulate Laura back into his arms before the ink on the final decree dried completely.
Within two hours, Richard had purchased two dozen long-stemmed red roses, put on his finest suit, and driven like a madman straight to the hospital.
