Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Richard stared at his daughter, completely stunned by the cold authority in her tone.

"Valeria, what are you saying?" Richard stammered, stepping forward. "I'm your father!"
"A father who left my mother when she was dying," Valeria replied, standing tall beside Laura’s bed and gently taking Laura’s hand in hers. "A father who brought a young girl into our house while Mom was receiving chemotherapy. A father who came back here today only because you thought there was money to steal."
Mr. Harrison stepped forward, pulling a formal notice from his briefcase and presenting it to Richard.
"Mr. Miller," the attorney stated in a sharp, professional tone. "As the sole trustee of the Vance Estate, Miss Valeria Vance-Miller has instructed our firm to take immediate action. Effective immediately, the estate has acquired the primary mortgage on your residential property, as well as the outstanding commercial loans of your consulting firm from First Illinois Bank."
Richard’s eyes widened in horror. "You... you bought my debt?"
"We did," Valeria said plainly. "And because your firm is currently six months behind on its credit obligations, I am executing our rights as primary creditor. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the suburban house. The firm's assets will be liquidated to settle your outstanding liabilities."
"You can't do this to me!" Richard shouted, his face turning beet red as panic completely overtook him. "I raised you! I fed you!"
"No," Valeria countered, her eyes gleaming with fierce tears. "Laura raised me. Laura cooked my meals, reviewed my homework, sat with me through every fever, and taught me what love and integrity look like. You were just a man who lived in the same house and demanded to be served."
Richard turned frantically to Laura, dropping the useless red roses onto the floor where they fell scattered across the linoleum. "Laura! Please! Speak to her! You can't let her destroy me!"
Laura looked at the man she had once loved. She felt no hatred toward him, no desire for petty revenge. She simply felt a profound, liberating pity.
"You destroyed yourself, Richard," Laura said quietly. "When you asked who would cook for you, you showed us exactly who you were. Now, you’ll have to learn to feed yourself."

Mr. Harrison gestured toward the door, where two uniformed hospital security officers were now waiting. "Please leave the premises peacefully, Mr. Miller, or we will have you formally escorted off the property for harassment."
Defeated, ruined, and stripped of his pride, Richard backed out of the room slowly, his head bowed, stepping over the ruined petals of the red roses he had brought.
