Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Titan

Inside Unit 412, BCI agents discovered three unregistered assault rifles, forty thousand dollars in unrecorded cash seized from traffic stops, and a encrypted laptop containing detailed video feeds from the hidden cameras Todd had installed throughout his home.

The video feeds were the smoking gun.

They contained hundreds of hours of unedited, crystal-clear footage showing Todd’s relentless psychological and physical abuse of Maddie—including the horrific incident where he threw her down the stairs and the moment he struck baby Mia with his leather duty belt.

Todd had kept the footage as a sick trophy, confident that no one would ever gain access to his private vault.

The next morning, the hammer of justice fell with relentless, crushing force.

I stood on the front lawn of our house, holding a cup of hot coffee beside Mark, as three unmarked state trooper vehicles and two federal FBI SUVs pulled up to the curb.

Agent Torres stepped out, a broad, triumphant smile on her face.

"It’s over, Sarah," Torres said, leaning against the fence. "The FBI and BCI just executed a federal arrest warrant at Todd’s home. He was indicted on twenty-four federal counts, including felony child abuse, domestic terrorism, civil rights violations under color of law, grand larceny, and money laundering."

Maddie stepped onto the porch, holding baby Mia wrapped in a soft pink blanket. Mia was gaining weight, her cheeks pink and healthy, her eyes bright and curious as she looked at the morning sun.

"Is... is he in jail?" Maddie asked, her voice light, as if she could barely process the reality of freedom.

"Todd Vance was denied bail by a federal magistrate ten minutes ago," Agent Torres confirmed, looking at Maddie with deep respect. "He is being held in a federal detention facility in Cincinnati until trial. His union revoked his legal defense fund the moment the federal corruption charges dropped. He will never wear a badge again, Maddie. He is going away for a very, very long time."

Maddie let out a long, ragged breath—a breath she seemed to have been holding for three long, agonizing years.

She sank onto the porch swing, pulling Mia close to her chest, tears spilling over her cheeks. But for the first time since I had found her standing in my doorway weeks ago, these were not tears of paralyzing terror.

They were tears of absolute, miraculous relief.
