Chapter 2 - The Hidden Vault and the Digital Paper TrailI slipped deeper into the shadows of the service hallway as quick, shuffling footsteps approached. I ducked into an empty pantry just in time as Emily hurried past, her head bowed, holding a cold compress to her reddened cheek. Her sobs were muffled, broken, and filled with a despair that made my blood run ice cold.

Once the hallway cleared, I needed to move fast. I couldn't confront them directly yet—doing so would only allow them to destroy evidence or intimidate Emily further. I needed hard, verifiable documentation.

I navigated quietly toward Richard’s private study, the room where the financial and legal decisions of the household were orchestrated. The heavy oak door was pulled shut, but a narrow sliver of light showed underneath.

I crept up to the door and listened. The study sounded empty. Richard and Victoria must have retreated to the parlor or the kitchen.

Gently, I tested the brass knob. It turned smoothly with a soft click. The door opened.

The study smelled of aged bourbon, leather, and old paper. The walls were lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves. I slipped inside and locked the door behind me with a silent click.

As a forensic financial investigator, I knew exactly where high-net-worth individuals hid their illegal paper trails: not in obvious safes, but in auxiliary digital storage hubs disguised as everyday office equipment, or behind false panels. I approached the large executive desk. The primary computer was locked, requiring a biometric or password scan. However, connected to the back of the router was a high-capacity network-attached storage (NAS) drive.

I pulled a compact forensic data-ripper drive from my bag, plugged it directly into the auxiliary port of the NAS hub, and initiated an automated script. The device began cloning the directory logs, financial folders, trust deeds, and offshore transfer files at blinding speed.

While the data downloaded, my eyes scanned the physical documents scattered across Richard’s desk.

Right on top was a draft of a medical power of attorney and psychiatric incompetency declaration—all filled out in Emily’s name, awaiting a forged physician's signature. They were planning to legally declare Emily mentally unstable so they could institutionalize her permanently and absorb her multi-million-dollar trust fund into Daniel's personal accounts.

I grabbed my phone and snapped high-resolution photos of every page, capturing the dates, the fake medical letterheads, and Richard’s handwritten notes detailing how to drug her food to induce lethargy and cognitive confusion.

Watery oatmeal.

Of course. The bruises weren't just from physical abuse; they were the result of physical restraint when she fought back against the sedatives they were mixing into her meals.

My data-ripper vibrated softly in my pocket: Transfer Complete.

I unplugged the drive, secured it inside my inner jacket pocket, and wiped my digital footprint from the network logs. Just as I unlocked the study door to slip back out into the hallway, heavy footsteps approached.

“Did you lock the side door?” Richard’s voice echoed down the hall, growing closer by the second.

Panic spiked, but my professional training kept my movements calm and methodical. I slipped behind a heavy velvet drapery covering the study’s floor-to-ceiling bay windows just as the study door clicked open.
