Chapter 4 - The Confrontation on the Landing“Hide!” Emily whispered frantically, shoving me toward the heavy velvet wardrobe in the corner of the room.

I slipped inside just as the digital keypad outside beeped rapidly.
Bleep-beep-beep-click.
The door swung open, and the harsh hallway light cut across the dark room. A heavy set of footsteps strode inside. Through the slatted louvers of the wardrobe door, I saw a tall, imposing silhouette standing over Emily’s mattress.
It wasn't Richard. It was Daniel.
He looked different without his charming fiancé smile. His face was twisted into a mask of cruel, arrogant menace.
“What are you doing awake?” Daniel hissed, his voice cold and venomous.
Emily shrank back against the wall, clutching her blanket. “I can’t sleep, Daniel. Please... just let me out of here.”
“You’ll stay right here until the wedding is over,” Daniel snapped, grabbing her roughly by the upper arm and yanking her upward. “Mom and Dad are already stressed enough without you acting like a lunatic. Drink this.”
He pulled a small plastic cup filled with a cloudy, viscous liquid from his pocket and thrust it toward her face.
“No! I won't take it!” Emily cried, swatting the cup away. It hit the floor, splashing its contents across the wooden floorboards.
Daniel’s expression turned murderous. He raised his hand back, fingers curled into a fist, ready to strike his own sister.
My training, my patience, and my self-control snapped.
Before my mind could process the risk, I pushed the heavy wardrobe door open with a resounding bang, stepping directly into the center of the bedroom.
“Touch her, Daniel, and I swear to God you will spend the rest of your life behind bars,” I said, my voice echoing off the walls with icy, unyielding authority.
Daniel froze mid-swing. Slowly, he turned around, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief as he stared at me standing in his sister’s dark prison cell.
“Claire?” he whispered, color draining entirely from his face. “What... what are you doing here? How did you—?”
“I saw everything, Daniel,” I interrupted, stepping closer, refusing to shrink back an inch. “I saw the bruises. I read the financial audits. I downloaded the forged trust documents from your father’s study. The game is over.”
For a second, panic flickered in Daniel’s eyes. Then, his features hardened into desperate fury. He lunged toward the doorway, blocking my exit, and whipped his phone out of his pocket.
“You shouldn't have come back here, Claire,” Daniel sneered, his thumb flying across his screen. “You think you’re so smart with your corporate compliance background? You’re trespassing on private property in the middle of the night. My father owns the local police chief. By the time I’m done telling them you broke in and tried to steal family heirlooms, you’ll be the one in cuffs.”
I didn't flinch. I reached into my bag, pulled out my primary phone, and held the screen up so he could see it clearly.

“Go ahead and call them, Daniel,” I smiled coldly. “Because while you were standing here threatening your sister, my colleague Maya—who is an active federal cyber-crimes liaison—just received the complete encrypted data packet containing your family’s tax evasion records, interstate wire fraud logs, and embezzlement schemes. If anything happens to me or Emily in this house within the next ten minutes, an automated emergency protocol triggers a direct dispatch to the FBI field office in Boston.”
Daniel’s thumb hovered over his screen. The color completely vanished from his face. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy of the Mercer family suddenly looked like a terrified child staring down an avalanche.
