Chapter 3 - Trapped in the Lion’s DenThrough the thick fabric of the velvet drapery, I watched Richard walk into the study, turning on a dim desk lamp that cast long, golden shadows across the room. He poured himself a finger of neat bourbon, muttering under his breath about Emily’s defiance and the upcoming wedding logistics.

“She’s too observant,” Victoria’s voice drifted in from the doorway as she followed her husband inside. “That Claire woman. Did you see how she looked at the table when Emily was served? She didn't buy the clumsy excuse for a second.”
Richard took a slow sip of bourbon, scoffing. “Claire is an analyst or some corporate paper-pusher. What can she possibly do? Once Daniel marries her next month, her corporate accounts merge into our family portfolio anyway. Daniel assured me she has substantial pre-marital holdings from her tech-consulting firm.”
My blood ran cold.
So the marriage was never just about affection or building a life. Daniel had targeted me specifically for my own independent wealth, intending to use me as a financial cash cow to bail out his parents' failing real estate investments and prop up their lavish lifestyle.
“Still,” Victoria mused, pacing near the desk. “We need to keep Emily heavily sedated until the wedding is over. If she makes a scene in front of Claire again, it could complicate things. Make sure the nurse increases her evening dosage.”
“I’ll handle it in the morning,” Richard grunted, tossing back the rest of his drink. “Let’s go to bed. I’m exhausted.”
They turned off the desk lamp and walked out of the study, pulling the door shut behind them.
I waited three agonizing minutes in the darkness behind the drapery, listening to the distant sound of their bedroom door closing upstairs. Only then did I step out from my hiding place.
I needed to see Emily before I left. I couldn't abandon her in this house tonight knowing what they were planning to do with those forged psychiatric documents.
Quietly and swiftly, I crept up the grand staircase, avoiding the third and fourth steps which I knew would creak under my weight. The second-floor hallway was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint silver glow of the moon filtering through the high arch windows.
Emily’s bedroom was at the very end of the east wing—a room that clearly used to be a storage closet or a maid’s quarters, lacking the luxurious proportions of the rest of the estate.
I reached the door and pressed my ear against the wood. Silence.
I tried the brass handle. Locked from the outside with a heavy digital keypad deadbolt.
Frowning, I pulled a small tension tool and a pick from my emergency lock-picking kit—standard equipment for high-risk corporate site audits. Working entirely by touch and muscle memory in the dark hallway, I felt the internal tumblers click.
Click. Click. Snap.
The deadbolt slid open with a whisper.
I pushed the door open just enough to slip inside, closing it silently behind me. The room was freezing cold. In the dim moonlight, I saw Emily huddled on a thin mattress on the floor, shivering beneath a single threadbare blanket.
“Emily,” I whispered, kneeling beside her.
She bolted upright with a terrified gasp, her hands flying up to protect her face. When she recognized my silhouette in the moonlight, her wide, tear-filled eyes locked onto mine.
“Claire?” she breathed, her voice cracking. “How... how did you get in here?”
“I got your note,” I said softly, taking her cold, trembling hand in mine. “And I found the documents downstairs. They’re planning to institutionalize you, Emily. They want to steal your trust fund.”
Emily began to cry silently, her small frame shaking. “I tried to tell people. Every time I call the police, Daniel intercepts the call or tells them I’m having a psychotic episode. Nobody believes me.”
“I believe you,” I said fiercely, pulling the micro-drive from my pocket. “And more importantly, I have the digital evidence, the financial trails, and the forged documents backed up securely in three separate off-site cloud servers. They can't hide from this anymore.”

Before Emily could reply, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the end of the hallway.
Footsteps. Heavy, hurried, and moving directly toward Emily’s door.
