Chapter 2 - The Second-Floor Vault“You think you can play games with us, Emily?”

Richard Mercer’s voice echoed down the darkened hallway, dripping with a cold, sadistic fury that bore no resemblance to the detached, whiskey-sipping patriarch Claire had met at the dinner table just hours ago.
Claire froze in the shadows of the corridor, pressing her back flat against the floral-patterned wallpaper. She was just outside the master study, where the door had been left cracked open by an inch.
Peering through the narrow vertical slit, Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
The study was bathed in the harsh, blue glow of a multi-monitor computer setup. In the center of the room, Emily was tied securely to a heavy wooden armchair, her head slumped sideways, tears streaming down her pale, bruised cheeks. Her oversized cardigan had slipped off one shoulder, revealing a network of angry, faded purple bruises marring her upper arm.
Standing over her was Victoria Mercer, her pearls gleaming under the desk lamp like drops of venom, holding a thick leather riding crop.
“Mom... please... I couldn't swallow the soup,” Emily sobbed, her voice cracking into a ragged wheeze. “My throat... it burns every time I try to eat solid food since the last ‘treatment’...”
“Your digestive issues are entirely psychosomatic, Emily,” Victoria snapped, her voice sharp and clinical. “Just like your little rebellion this afternoon. Do you think we didn't see you slip that note to Claire? Do you think we are stupid?”
“I just... I wanted someone to know—”
“Know what? That you are an ungrateful, unstable liability?” Richard interrupted, stepping into Claire’s line of sight. He poured himself a glass of amber whiskey from a crystal decanter on the mahogany bar. “Your brother Daniel is marrying into a respectable family. Claire is a sharp, compliant corporate auditor. She will give us the grandchildren and the clean social image this family requires. We cannot have you opening your mouth and ruining everything.”
“She’s going to find out the truth, Dad!” Emily cried out, a spark of desperate defiance flashing in her sunken eyes. “She’s a compliance expert! She traces hidden money! She’ll figure out that you’ve been embezzling from my grandfather’s trust fund and using my ‘medical incapacity’ as a legal cover to declare me mentally incompetent!”
Claire’s blood ran ice-cold in her veins.
The trust fund.
Suddenly, every single erratic detail of the Mercer family’s financial footprint clicked into place in her mind. Emily wasn't just a sick sister; she was the primary legal beneficiary of a multi-million-dollar trust established by her maternal grandfather—a trust that Richard and Victoria had been systematically draining for five years by faking Emily’s medical deterioration and keeping her legally sequestered under their guardianship.
“You talk too much, girl,” Victoria hissed, raising the riding crop.
“Stop!”
Claire didn't think. The forensic investigator in her took a backseat to the human being watching an innocent person being tortured. She kicked the study door open with a resounding crash that slammed it against the interior wall, sending a thunderous echo through the mansion.
Victoria shrieked, dropping the riding crop. Richard whipped around, his face twisting into an ugly mask of murderous rage as he stared at the woman standing in his doorway.
“Claire?!” Richard roared. “What the hell are you doing in this house?!”

Claire stepped across the threshold, her hand steady, holding her phone aloft with the camera lens flashing a bright, unblinking red recording light directly into their horrified faces.
“I’m just doing my job, Richard,” Claire said, her voice steady, lethal, and completely devoid of fear. “And trust me... the audit of your family's crimes is going straight to the federal authorities.”
