Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Night“Step away from the fence, ladies,” the lead security guard demanded, advancing slowly with a heavy industrial flashlight beam blinding their eyes. “Mr. Mercer wants a word with you back inside.”

Claire planted her boots firmly on the gravel, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept her body positioned between the guards and Emily, who was trembling violently from exhaustion and cold.
“You’re working for a man who is under federal indictment for embezzlement and attempted murder,” Claire said, her voice ringing out clear, steady, and loud enough to carry across the clearing. “The moment local law enforcement arrives—and trust me, they are already five minutes away—every single person assisting the Mercers tonight will be charged as an accessory to felony kidnapping.”
The guard hesitated, his boots slowing on the gravel. He exchanged a nervous glance with his partner. “We just follow property management orders, ma’am—we don't know anything about— stupidity—"
“You’ll have plenty of time to explain your ‘property management orders’ to a federal judge,” a sharp, metallic voice echoed from down the road.
Suddenly, a brilliant flash of red and blue light cut through the dark trees.
A convoy of three marked state police cruisers—lights flashing and sirens wailing in a deafening crescendo—swept around the corner of the estate access road, slamming to a halt right behind the private security SUV.
Doors flew open in unison. State troopers, accompanied by federal postal inspectors and two armed U.S. Marshals, poured out into the clearing, their badges held high and weapons drawn.
“State Police! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!”
The security guards dropped their flashlights instantly, throwing their hands into the air and stepping back against their vehicle.
From the main house, Richard, Victoria, and Daniel came rushing down the gravel path, shouting indignantly, only to stop dead in their tracks as they stared at the flashing police cruisers and armed troopers surrounding their property.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Richard bellowed, his face purple with rage as he pointed a shaking finger at the lead state trooper. “This is private property! You have no right—!”
“Richard Mercer?” the lead detective asked, stepping forward with an arrest warrant in his hand. “You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, financial fraud, aggravated assault, and the systematic poisoning and unlawful detainment of Emily Mercer.”
Daniel turned white as a sheet, backing away toward his parents. “There’s been a mistake! We’re law-abiding citizens—!”
“Mr. Daniel Mercer, you’re also coming with us as an unindicted co-conspirator in the corporate cover-up,” another trooper stated, snapping cold steel handcuffs onto Daniel’s wrists with a definitive click.
As Richard and Victoria were forcefully restrained and read their Miranda rights, Claire stood by the open door of a police cruiser, watching the spectacular, well-deserved collapse of the Mercer empire.

Emily, wrapped in a warm wool blanket provided by a paramedic, leaned her head against Claire’s shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure, unadulterated relief.
“It’s over, Em,” Claire whispered softly, kissing the top of her head. “You’re finally free.”
