Chapter 4 - The Escape from the Manor“I don’t think so, Daniel,” Claire said sharply, sliding her phone into her zippered tactical pocket and positioning herself protectively in front of Emily.

“Don’t be a fool,” Daniel snapped, lunging forward with a sudden, violent burst of speed to grab Claire’s wrist.

Claire anticipated the move. Drawing upon six years of tactical self-defense training she had undergone while auditing high-risk international syndicates, she pivoted on her heel, caught Daniel’s outstretched arm, and used his own momentum to throw him hard against the heavy mahogany bookshelves.

Books tumbled in a chaotic avalanche around him as Daniel hit the floor with a heavy grunt, winded and disoriented.

“Run, Emily!” Claire yelled, grabbing the younger girl by the hand.

They bolted out of the study and sprinted down the dimly lit hallway toward the rear service staircase. Behind them, Richard roared with blind fury, followed by the frantic sound of footsteps pursuing them through the house.

“Get them! Don’t let them reach the ground floor!” Richard screamed.

Claire and Emily tore down the spiral stairs, their breathing ragged and echoing off the stone walls. They burst into the kitchen just as Victoria appeared from the dining room, screeching like a banshee and trying to block the exit.

Without breaking stride, Claire grabbed a heavy wooden cutting board from the counter and hurled it directly at Victoria’s path. Victoria shrieked, ducking out of the way and crashing into a pantry shelf, sending jars of preserves shattering across the tile floor.

Claire threw open the conservatory glass door into the cool night air.

“Through the garden! Toward the perimeter fence!” Claire urged, pulling Emily behind her into the dark, rain-slicked lawn.

Behind them, the floodlights of the Mercer estate suddenly blared to life, washing the entire backyard in blinding white illumination. The heavy oak back doors slammed open, and Daniel appeared on the patio, shouting orders into his phone.

“Security gate four! Cut them off at the northern hedge!”

Claire towed Emily through the dense, overgrown rhododendron bushes, ignoring the sharp branches whipping against their faces. Her car was parked a hundred yards down the unpaved auxiliary road outside the gates. If they could reach the vehicle before the estate's private security team locked the perimeter, they would make it.

Suddenly, a pair of headlights cut through the dark ahead of them.

A black SUV bearing the Mercer estate security emblem roared down the gravel access road, blocking their path to Claire’s sedan and stopping dead in front of them with a screech of tires.

Two burly security guards in tactical gear stepped out of the vehicle, their faces grim, cutting off any remaining avenue of escape.

Claire pulled Emily behind her, her hand dipping into her pocket to clutch her phone. The screen flashed: MAYA - SECURE UPLOAD COMPLETE.

The evidence was already in federal hands. Now, they just had to survive the next five minutes.
