Chapter 2 - The Gilded Parasites

The sun had not yet risen over the frozen hills of Greenwich when Isabelle began her preparations in the kitchen. The bruise on her cheekbone was now a deep, dark violet, standing out in stark contrast against her pale skin. She chose not to cover it with makeup. Instead, she swept her dark hair back into a neat, tight ponytail, ensuring that the mark of Nathaniel’s violence was fully visible to anyone who looked at her.

By 6:45 a.m., the dining table was set with immaculate precision. The Tiffany silver cutlery gleamed under the soft glow of the crystal chandelier, and the antique Meissen porcelain plates—a personal favorite of Victoria’s—stood ready.

In the center of the table was a beautifully arranged spread: smoked salmon, fresh brioche, organic berries, and a French press filled with the freshly brewed Panama Geisha coffee Nathaniel had demanded.

At exactly 7:00 a.m., the door to the dining room opened.

Nathaniel walked in, dressed in a sharp, navy blue bespoke suit, his silk tie knotted perfectly. He smelled of expensive cologne and mint mouthwash, showing no trace of the heavy drinking or the violent rage from the night before.

He glanced at Isabelle, his eyes lingering for a brief second on the dark bruise on her cheek. A flicker of something—perhaps a momentary unease—crossed his face, but it was quickly replaced by his usual cold, mocking arrogance.

"I see you finally learned how to follow directions," Nathaniel said, pulling out his chair and sitting down. He poured himself a cup of the steaming coffee, taking a slow sip. He closed his eyes, savoring the rich, floral aroma. "Excellent. Let’s hope this level of competence continues."

A moment later, Victoria entered the room, draped in a lavender cashmere robe, her silver-streaked hair styled perfectly. She sat down opposite her son, offering him a warm, doting smile before turning her cold eyes toward Isabelle.

"The table looks acceptable, Isabelle," Victoria murmured, her gaze stopping on Isabelle’s bruised face. She let out a small, irritated sigh. "But really, dear, must you display your face like that? The catering staff will be here later this afternoon to prepare for the charity committee meeting. It is highly inappropriate for you to look so... neglected. Go put some concealer on."

"I prefer to leave it as it is, Victoria," Isabelle said, her voice quiet, calm, and entirely steady.

Nathaniel slammed his coffee cup down onto the saucer, the porcelain rattling violently. "Excuse me? What did you just say?"

Isabelle turned her head slowly, looking directly into her husband’s furious gray eyes. "I said, I prefer to leave it as it is. After all, you worked so hard to put it there, Nathaniel. It would be a shame to hide your craftsmanship."

The dining room went completely silent.

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched so tightly that a vein began to throb at his temple. He stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the table.

"You are pushing your luck, Isabelle," he hissed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low growl. "Do not think for one second that because you are in this house, you have any leverage. I can have you committed to a private psychiatric facility by noon. All it takes is one signature from our family physician, and you’ll spend the next five years heavily sedated, wondering where your life went."

Victoria took a delicate bite of her brioche, nodding in agreement. "He’s right, darling. Your behavior lately has been incredibly erratic. We have all noticed it. The stress of managing a household of this scale seems to be... too much for your fragile mind. A quiet retreat in upstate New York might be just what you need."

This was their ultimate weapon—the threat they had used to keep her compliant for years. They had slowly built a paper trail of "mental instability," documenting her missed social events, her quietness, and her isolation as signs of a deep, psychological breakdown.

But Isabelle did not flinch. Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek, black leather folio, placing it gently on the table between them.

"I don't think that will be necessary," Isabelle said.

Nathaniel frowned, looking down at the folio. "What is this? Another one of your pathetic diary entries?"

"Open it," Isabelle commanded, her tone carrying an authority that made both Nathaniel and Victoria freeze.

With an irritated sneer, Nathaniel flipped the folio open.

Inside were dozens of pages of highly detailed financial ledgers, bank transfer receipts, and corporate tax documents. As his eyes scanned the first page, the arrogance on his face began to fracture. His eyes darted from line to line, his breathing suddenly becoming shallow.

"This... where did you get this?" he stammered, his voice losing its steady edge.

"What is it, Nathaniel?" Victoria asked, her voice sharpening with concern as she stood up to look over her son’s shoulder.

"These are the internal transaction logs for Crawford Global Investments," Isabelle explained, her voice as smooth and cold as the marble they had stood on the night before. "Specifically, the logs showing the unauthorized transfer of eighty-five million dollars from the Carrington Trust’s offshore reserve accounts into your personal shell companies in Panama."

"Isabelle, you stupid bitch," Nathaniel snarled, his face turning a dark, dangerous red. "You have no right to access those accounts! The trust is managed by our board—"

"The board that you bribed, Nathaniel," Isabelle interrupted. "The board whose signatures you forged on the authorization documents last October. I have the forensic handwriting analysis right there on page twelve. And on page fifteen, you’ll find the IP addresses used to execute those transfers—all of which trace back directly to your private study in this very house."

Victoria’s face drained of color as she stared at the documents. "This... this is blackmail. We will sue you for corporate espionage! You signed a prenuptial agreement, Isabelle! You have nothing!"

"The prenuptial agreement is a very interesting document, Victoria," Isabelle said, leaning forward, her eyes flashing with a brilliant, predatory light. "Under Section 4, Paragraph B, the agreement is rendered entirely null and void if either party engages in criminal financial fraud against the other, or if there is documented evidence of physical abuse resulting in severe bodily harm."

She reached down, tapped her phone screen, and projected a video onto the high-definition smart screen mounted on the dining room wall.

The video of the previous night’s assault played in a continuous loop. The sound of Nathaniel’s strikes echoed through the dining room, loud and violent, followed by Victoria’s calm, approving voice: “You’re correcting her appropriately, Nathaniel. Discipline matters.”

Nathaniel stared at the screen, his mouth hanging slightly open, his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table.

"You've been recording us," he whispered, a sudden, terrifying realization dawning on him. "In our own home."

"This isn't your home, Nathaniel," Isabelle said, her voice rising, filled with the full, unchecked power of her heritage. "This mansion was purchased by my grandfather in 1985. It belongs entirely to the Carrington Estate. And as of 8:00 a.m. this morning, your access to all Carrington funds, accounts, and properties has been completely terminated."

She stood up, looking down at the two gilded parasites who had spent years feeding on her life.

"Now," Isabelle said, a cold, beautiful smile touching her lips. "I suggest you start packing. You have exactly twenty-four hours to vacate my house."
