Chapter 4 - The Last Stand of the Crawfords

The atmosphere inside the Greenwich mansion was suffocating. The grand rooms, once filled with the quiet elegance of old wealth, now felt like a high-security prison.
In the master study, Nathaniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled. On the mahogany desk lay several letters from his defense attorneys, all of them warning him of the impending federal indictments.
"There has to be a way out of this, Mom!" Nathaniel yelled, turning to Victoria, who sat stiffly on the velvet sofa, her face unusually pale, her hands trembling as she held her tea. "We have the media connections! We can claim the video was AI-generated! We can claim she’s trying to blackmail us!"
"The financial records are the real problem, Nathaniel," Victoria said, her voice tight, the usual arrogant calm completely gone. "The SEC has already issued subpoenas for our offshore accounts. If those funds are seized, we won't even have enough money to pay our legal defense team. We will be ruined. Completely ruined."
"I am not going to prison!" Nathaniel screamed, slamming his fist onto the desk. "Not for her! She was nothing before she married me! A lonely, broken girl grieving her dead parents! I gave her a purpose!"
"Then we must make her an offer she cannot refuse," Victoria said, her eyes narrowing as a cold, desperate calculation took hold of her. "She still cares about her family’s reputation, Nathaniel. The Carrington name is all she has left. If we threaten to release the private medical records we fabricated—the ones detailing her 'psychological breakdowns'—it will ruin her standing in the high-society circles she so desperately wants to return to."
"Do you think she’ll care?" Nathaniel asked, his voice cracking with doubt. "She looked at me this morning like I was nothing, Mom. Like I was a bug she was about to step on."
"She is playing a game of chicken, Nathaniel," Victoria hissed, standing up and walking over to her son, her fingers gripping his shoulders with a fierce, desperate intensity. "And a Crawford never loses. We will go to the Heritage Gala next week. We will accept the award. And we will confront her there, in front of her peers, where she cannot hide behind her lawyers. We will force her to sign a settlement, or we will drag her down to hell with us."
Just then, the heavy double doors of the study opened.
Isabelle stood in the doorway, dressed in a stunning, blood-red silk gown that flowed around her like fire. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, and her lips were painted a matching, fierce crimson. The bruise on her cheek was completely gone, leaving her skin flawless, radiant, and utterly beautiful.
"Are you still here?" Isabelle asked, her voice light, almost amused, as she leaned against the doorframe. "I thought I told you to pack."
Nathaniel took a step toward her, his fists clenching, but he stopped when he saw the two large, burly security guards standing directly behind her in the hallway.
"You think you’ve won, Isabelle?" Nathaniel sneered, trying to summon his old, intimidating posture. "You’re playing a very dangerous game. The board of Crawford Global is already drafting a countersuit against you and Charles Vance for corporate sabotage."
"The board of Crawford Global?" Isabelle let out a soft, melodic laugh that echoed through the tense room. "Oh, Nathaniel. You really don't read the news, do you? Your board members began resigning at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. As of right now, your stock has plunged forty percent, and your chief financial officer is currently in a meeting with the federal prosecutor, trading your secrets for a plea deal."
Victoria stood up, her cashmeres rustling as she tried to maintain her dignified posture. "You are an ungrateful, malicious little girl, Isabelle. We welcomed you into our family. We protected you."
"You poisoned me, Victoria," Isabelle said, her voice dropping into a cold, dangerous whisper as she stepped into the room. "You watched your son strike me, and you called it 'discipline.' You systematically stole my family's heritage, and you called it 'management.' But your reign of terror is over."
She reached into her small clutch and pulled out two formal, gold-embossed invitation cards, tossing them onto the desk.

"I’ll see you both at the Heritage Gala next week," Isabelle said, a brilliant, terrifying smile playing on her lips. "Make sure you wear your best jewelry, Victoria. It will be the last time you’ll ever have the opportunity to show it off."
Without waiting for an answer, Isabelle turned and walked away, her red gown trailing behind her like a line of fire, leaving the two Crawford parasites to drown in their own terror.
