Chapter 3 - The Shadow Alliance

The rain outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private club in Manhattan was relentless, matching the dark, turbulent mood of the city below. Isabelle sat in a secluded corner booth, her face partially hidden by the high collar of her trench coat. The bruise on her cheek was now covered in a light layer of makeup, but the slight swelling was still visible.
Sitting across from her was Charles Vance—a man in his early sixties with sharp, piercing blue eyes and a legal reputation that struck terror into the hearts of Wall Street executives. Charles had been her father’s closest friend and the primary legal counsel for the Carrington family before the Crawfords had forced him out of her life.
Charles stared at the documents spread across the low table, his expression grave, his jaw clenched in quiet anger.
"They did this to you, Isabelle?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly as his eyes drifted to the bruise on her cheek. "My God... if Arthur were alive today, he would have torn Nathaniel Crawford to pieces with his bare hands."
"I don't need my grandfather to fight my battles anymore, Charles," Isabelle said, her voice steady and resolute. "I kept quiet for two years because I knew that if I fought back too early, they would use their connections to bury the evidence. I had to let them think they had won. I had to let them become comfortable enough to make mistakes."
"And mistakes they made," Charles said, tapping the financial ledger. "This Panamanian transfer is amateur hour. Nathaniel was desperate. Crawford Global Investments is a house of cards, Isabelle. They’ve been using your trust fund to cover up massive losses in their European tech portfolio. If you hadn't stopped them today, the Carrington Trust would have been completely drained by the end of the fiscal year."
"Can we freeze the assets immediately?" she asked.
"Yes," Charles nodded, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "I’ve already filed an emergency petition with the New York Supreme Court. Given the evidence of both physical abuse and severe financial fraud, no judge in this state will deny the injunction. As of this moment, Nathaniel’s personal and corporate accounts are being locked down. He won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee without the court's approval."
"What about Victoria?"
"Victoria is co-signed on all the Panamanian shell companies," Charles explained, a cold smile playing on his lips. "She isn't just an accomplice to the abuse, Isabelle. She is an active co-conspirator in federal wire fraud. She’s going to face the exact same charges as her son. The SEC is already reviewing the files I sent over this morning."
Isabelle took a slow sip of her tea, the warmth spreading through her chest. "They think they can play the mental health card. Nathaniel threatened to have me committed this morning."
"Let them try," Charles scoffed. "I’ve already secured independent psychological evaluations from three of the top psychiatric minds in the country, all of whom have certified your absolute competence. If they attempt to file any medical petition against you, it will be treated as an attempt to obstruct justice and tamper with a federal witness."
Just then, Isabelle’s phone began to vibrate on the table. The caller ID showed Nathaniel’s name.
She looked at Charles, who offered a slow, encouraging nod.
Isabelle slid her finger across the screen and placed the phone on speaker. "What do you want, Nathaniel?"
"Isabelle, you crazy bitch!" Nathaniel’s voice screamed through the speaker, laced with a level of panic and rage she had never heard from him before. "What did you do? My corporate cards are declined! The bank just called—they’re freezing our liquid reserves! You turn this off right now, or I swear to God, I will make you pay!"
"I told you, Nathaniel," Isabelle said, her voice completely calm, a sharp contrast to his hysterical screaming. "Your access to my family’s wealth is over. The locks on the Greenwich mansion are being changed tomorrow morning. If your things are still there, they will be thrown into the street."
"You can't do this!" he roared. "I am your husband! I have rights to that property!"
"You had rights, Nathaniel," Isabelle corrected him. "Until you decided that my face was a canvas for your discipline. Tell Victoria to enjoy her last night in silk. Because where both of you are going, the wardrobe is remarkably uniform."
She hung up the phone before he could answer, the silence of the private club settling over them once more.
Charles looked at her, his eyes filled with a deep, profound respect. "You really are your grandfather’s granddaughter, Isabelle. The Carrington legacy is in very safe hands."
"We aren't done yet, Charles," Isabelle said, her eyes darkening. "The Crawford family has spent decades building a network of corrupt politicians, judges, and media executives to protect their name. They are going to use every single one of them to fight this. We need to make sure that when the blow lands, it is so public, and so devastating, that no one in this city will dare to stand by their side."

"What do you have in mind?" Charles asked.
Isabelle leaned forward, her voice dropping into a whisper as she laid out the final phase of her trap. "Next week is the annual Manhattan Heritage Gala. The Crawfords are scheduled to receive the 'Family of the Year' award. I think it’s time we give the audience a real show."
