PART 1: THE HAND ABOVE MY HEAD (Continued)

The front doors did not just open; they bounced against the interior stone walls with a deafening crack that echoed through the two-story foyer. The bitter, rain-soaked night air rushed inside, causing the flames of the wall sconces to flicker wildly.

Vivian’s crystal wineglass shattered on the third step of the grand staircase. Deep red liquid splattered across the white marble, spreading like a pool of blood between her Italian leather shoes. She didn't look down at the stain. Her eyes were fixed entirely on the silhouette standing in the doorway.

Julian froze. His fingers, which had been knotted into the fabric of my sweater, went slack. He stumbled backward a step, his breath hitching in his throat as the sheer presence of the man entering his home filled the room.

Through the doorway walked Thomas Vance.

He was flanked by four men in dark, tailored suits—men who moved with the quiet, synchronized precision of high-level executive security. Thomas did not look like a man who had traveled in a storm. His bespoke charcoal coat was immaculate, his silver hair perfectly brushed back, and his eyes, cold and sharp as obsidian, locked onto Julian with a lethal intensity.

Thomas Vance was the chief executive of Vance International, a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate that dictated the economic tides of the entire eastern seaboard. He was a man who broke governors and bought banks before breakfast. To Julian, Thomas Vance was a god.

To me, he was Dad.

"Get your hands off my daughter," Thomas said. His voice wasn't a shout. It was a low, resonant rumble that carried the weight of absolute authority.

Julian’s face drained of color, turning a sickly shade of gray. He looked at Thomas, then down at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air. "M-Mr. Vance? Your daughter? No... there’s a mistake. This is Mara. Mara Lark. She has no family."

"She has the only family that matters to your balance sheet, Julian," Thomas replied, stepping fully into the warmth of the foyer. One of his security detail immediately stepped forward, offering a hand to help me up. I took it, shifting my weight carefully, keeping my arm wrapped protectively around my eight-month-pregnant belly.

Vivian finally found her voice, though it trembled as she gripped the banister. "Mr. Vance, please. This is a private family matter. My son was simply... having a passionate discussion with his wife. Marriage can be difficult, as a man of your stature surely knows."

Thomas didn't even look up at her. He kept his eyes on Julian, who was trembling so violently he had to place a hand on the cracked console table to steady himself.

"A private family matter?" Thomas murmured, walking slowly toward Julian. "Is that what you call it when you threaten a pregnant woman in a house built on my money? Is that what you call forging psychiatric evaluations to steal her child?"

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer terror. He looked at me, realizing for the very first time that the quiet, submissive woman he thought he had trapped had been feeding his darkest secrets to the most powerful man in the city.

"You thought you built Cross Holdings from the ground up, didn't you, Julian?" Thomas stopped mere inches from him, towering over the younger man. "You thought those private equity infusions over the last three years came from anonymous European investors who just loved your vision. You thought your empire was thriving."

Thomas leaned in close, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Every brick of your company, every dollar in your accounts, and the very roof over your head belongs to a shell corporation controlled by Vance International. I own your debt, Julian. I own your assets. And as of exactly four minutes ago, when my daughter transmitted the audio of you threatening her life... I am calling every single one of those notes due."
