PART 3: THE GATHERING STORM

The penthouse suite at the Vance Regal Hotel was a fortress. For the next two weeks, it became my sanctuary. My father had transformed the entire top floor into a high-security medical wing, complete with a private obstetrician, 24-hour nursing staff, and a legal team that occupied the adjoining boardrooms.

Every morning, I woke up to the sound of printers humming and the soft murmur of attorneys discussing strategy.

Julian and Vivian did not go quietly into the night. Desperate to save themselves from impending ruin, they launched a vicious media campaign. Tabloids were flooded with leaked stories claiming that I had suffered a psychological breakdown due to high-risk pregnancy complications, and that the Vance family was using its immense wealth to isolate me from my devoted husband.

LEGAL NOTICE: VANCE GLOBAL LEGAL TASK FORCE “Any media outlet publishing unverified, defamatory statements regarding the health, mental stability, or medical privacy of Mara Lark-Vance will face immediate, multi-million-dollar litigation for tortious interference and defamation. The truth will be adjudicated in a court of law, not the court of public opinion.”

I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline, sipping chamomile tea as my attorney, Eleanor Vance-Ross (my aunt and head of our legal division), laid out the latest counter-measures.

"Julian’s attorneys filed an emergency petition for an injunction this morning," Eleanor said, adjusting her glasses. "They are demanding mandatory psychological screening for you and unsupervised visitation rights the moment the baby is born. They're using the forged doctor notes we found in his office."

I didn't flinch. "Let them file it. Have we authenticated the digital trail of those forgeries?"

"We did," Eleanor smiled, a predatory look in her eyes. "We traced the IP addresses directly to Vivian Cross's personal laptop. She paid a discredited psychiatrist fifty thousand dollars in cryptocurrency to write those reports without ever seeing you. We have the blockchain receipts, the emails, and the psychiatrist's signed confession. He cracked the moment the FBI knocked on his door."

Just then, my father entered the room, his expression grim. He held a copy of the invitation to the Annual Pediatric Foundation Gala—the very event Vivian had mentioned the night everything collapsed.

"Julian is planning to make an appearance tonight," Thomas said, setting the gold-embossed card on the table. "He’s desperate. His credit lines are completely frozen, his board has ousted him, and his investors are demanding their capital back. He thinks if he stands on that stage tonight, presents his 'Community Development' award, and plays the grieving, abandoned husband, he can force a public settlement from us."

I looked at the invitation. The Cross family had spent a decade using this specific charity gala to launder their reputation, painting themselves as benefactors of the city's youth while destroying lives behind closed doors.

"He wants a public scene?" I asked, looking up at my father. I felt the baby kick, stronger this time, as if agreeing with the fire burning in my chest. "Then let's give him one. It’s time to show the world exactly who Julian Cross is."
