PART 4: THE GALA EXPOSÉ

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of silk, diamonds, and high-society whispers. Flashbulbs blinded the entrance as the city's elite arrived for the Pediatric Foundation Gala.
Julian Cross stood near the center bar, looking immaculate in a tailored tuxedo. To an outsider, he appeared calm, but a closer look revealed the sweat glistening on his forehead and the slight tremor in his hand as he held his scotch. Vivian stood beside him, her smile tight and brittle, her eyes scanning the room like a hawk looking for a threat.
"The board hasn't called back," Julian whispered through gritted teeth, barely moving his lips as a photographer snapped their picture. "If we don't get the Vance family to back off tonight, the press will find out about the SEC filing by tomorrow morning."
"Calm down," Vivian hissed, her voice a sharp murmur. "Play the victim. Tell everyone who asks that Thomas Vance has kidnapped your wife and child. High society hates a bully, and Thomas is too proud to defend himself in public."
Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the ballroom died down. A heavy silence cascaded from the entrance doors all the way to the main stage.
The double doors opened, and a security detail wearing Vance International pins stepped through, clearing a wide path. Behind them walked my father, looking every bit the titan he was. And on his arm, dressed in a stunning, midnight-blue silk gown that proudly displayed my eight-month-pregnant silhouette, was me.
Julian dropped his glass. It didn't shatter on the thick carpet, but the amber liquid soaked into the fabric, a pathetic stain matching the panic in his eyes.
"Mara," he breathed, taking a step forward.
Before he could speak, the massive digital projector screens behind the main stage—which were supposed to show a video montage of the Cross family’s charity work—flickered.
Instead of charity photos, a crystal-clear audio recording began to blast through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art surround sound system.
"You have no money," Julian’s voice boomed through the room, loud, violent, and arrogant. "No family. No name that means anything. Every dress you wear, every meal you eat, every roof over your head exists because I allow it... You are nothing without my money!"
The ballroom erupted into gasps. People turned to look at Julian in absolute horror.
Then, the video fed switched to a high-definition recording from the foyer camera—the exact moment Julian raised his hand, the sound of the console table cracking, and Vivian’s voice drifting from the stairs: "Julian, be careful. Do not leave marks where people can see them. The pediatric foundation gala is tomorrow, and Mara will be photographed beside you."
Vivian stumbled backward, her face turning completely white. The sophisticated, elegant patrons of the charity moved away from the mother and son as if they were infected with a plague.

My father stepped up to the microphone on the stage. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. As the primary stakeholder of the Pediatric Foundation and the sole owner of Cross Holdings’ outstanding debt, I would like to introduce the new chairperson of the board... my daughter, Mara Vance."
I stepped up beside him, looking down at the ruined faces of the people who had tried to destroy me. "The Cross family's reign of terror ends tonight," I said into the microphone. "And your true debt has just come due."
