Chapter 3 - The Empty Nest

The world became a blur of red lights, screaming sirens, and the terrifying, cold realization of my own helplessness.
The hospital went into an immediate "Code Pink" lockdown. Security guards blocked the exits, nursing staff wept in the hallways, and the local police department swarmed the NICU. But the security footage revealed a devastating truth: a woman dressed in a nurse’s scrubs, her face completely obscured by a medical mask and a low-brimmed cap, had wheeled a portable transport incubator out through the service elevator fifteen minutes before the call.
"She’s gone, Jory," I screamed, grabbing his jacket, my fingers tearing at the fabric as I collapsed onto the floor of the hallway. "They took my baby! They took Clara!"
Jory caught me, his strong arms lifting me back into my wheelchair, his face set in a mask of pure, absolute steel. "Ara, listen to me. Breathe. Look at me."
I looked into his hazel eyes, finding the only steady thing in a universe that had just shattered.
"I am going to get her back," Jory whispered, his voice vibrating with a deep, personal vow. "They think they’ve won because they have her. They think you’re going to break. But they don't know who they’re dealing with. You are the smartest financial analyst in this city, and I am a detective who knows exactly how these cowards operate."
Desmond Vance rushed into the hallway, his face pale as he looked at the police presence. "Jory! We just got a notification from the land registry office. Sterling’s lawyers have just filed an emergency motion to fast-track the deed transfer, claiming you are medically incapacitated and unable to manage your own affairs."
"They're trying to force the transaction before we can trace the kidnapping back to them," I said, a cold, analytical focus suddenly piercing through my panic. The analyst in me—the woman who spent twelve hours a day finding patterns in chaotic market drops—forced her way back to the surface. "They don't want to kill her, Jory. They need her as leverage. If they kill her, they lose their only bargaining chip, and they face federal kidnapping charges."
"Exactly," Jory said, nodding. "Sterling is a narcissist, but he’s not a murderer unless he’s backed into a corner. He wants the money. He wants the Savannah estate to cover his fraud."
"Then we give him his meeting," I said, standing up from my wheelchair, ignoring the dull ache in my abdomen from the delivery. "He told me to be at our house at 8:00 PM. He wants me to sign the papers. I will be there."

"You can't go in alone, Ara," Desmond warned. "He’s desperate. If he realizes you’ve told the police, he might—"
"He won't know," Jory interrupted. "Because I am going to be inside that house before she even arrives. We’re going to wire the dining room. We’re going to set a trap so deep that when Sterling steps into it, his entire life will end before he can even touch the pen."
