Chapter 6 - The True Inheritance

One year later.

The southern sun was setting over the marshlands of Savannah, Georgia, casting a warm, golden-orange glow over the sprawling, historic estate that had belonged to my mother.

The wide wraparound porch was decorated with hundreds of white magnolias and twinkling fairy lights. A small, intimate group of family and friends—Otilia, Desmond, and the doctors and nurses who had stood by me—were laughing and drinking sweet tea from silver pitchers.

I stood near the wooden railing, wearing a simple, elegant sun dress of light blue cotton. My hair was long, moving gently in the warm ocean breeze.

"Mummy! Mum-mum!"

I looked down and smiled as Clara came toddling toward me, her chubby legs moving with a chaotic, beautiful energy. She was a healthy, happy one-year-old, her wide hazel eyes reflecting the warm light of the southern sky.

I leaned down and picked her up, holding her tightly against my hip. She giggled, her tiny, warm fingers reaching up to touch the silver locket around my neck—the one containing my mother's portrait.

"She has your laugh, Ara," Jory said, walking out from the double doors of the estate, carrying a tray of fresh peach cobbler. He had left the Atlanta PD to take over as the head of security for the Savannah Maritime District, a job that allowed him to be home with us every single night.

He set the tray down and walked over, his strong arm wrapping securely around my waist, his lips pressing a warm, lingering kiss to my temple.

"She has my laugh," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. "But she has your stubbornness."

"We call that determination in my family," Jory laughed, reaching out to tickle Clara’s tummy, making her squeal with delight.

Desmond Vance walked over, holding a glass of iced tea, a wide, triumphant smile on his face. "I just got the final notification from the federal bankruptcy court, Ara. Sterling’s assets have been completely liquidated to pay off the defrauded investors. The Savannah estate is officially cleared of all liens, and your mother’s trust has been restored to its original value under your sole, unchallengeable control."

"And Sterling?" I asked softly.

"His appeal was denied this morning," Desmond said. "He’s began his fifteen-year sentence at the federal penitentiary in Jessup. Fallon received ten years. They are officially yesterday’s news."

I looked out over the golden marshlands, feeling the cool, gentle breeze off the Atlantic.

I had survived the dark suburban home, the preeclampsia, and the terrifying shadow of a husband who had tried to steal my life. I had protected my daughter. I had reclaimed my family's legacy.

And as I looked into Jory's warm, loving eyes, I knew that the algorithms of Wall Street had nothing on the simple, beautiful mathematics of a life rebuilt on love, trust, and absolute truth.

The analyst had finally found her sanctuary. And Clara had her home.
