Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The confession was on the wire.
In the van parked two blocks away, the audio technicians held their breath as Sterling's voice was recorded in crystal-clear high definition, admitting to his knowledge of Clara’s location and his complicity in the extortion.
"You're a monster, Sterling," I said, my voice rising as I took a step back, my heels clicking on the hardwood. "You stole from my mother’s trust. You forged my signature. And now you’re using our own daughter’s life as a transaction."
"I did what I had to do!" Sterling roared, his face contorting into a mask of pure, uncontrolled rage. He lunged across the mahogany table, his large hands grabbing the lapels of my white blazer. "You think you’re so smart because you can run numbers? You’re nothing without my money! You’re a parasitic housewife who survived on my corporate success for three years! Sign the papers!"
"No," I hissed, looking him straight in the eye.
With a feral snarl, Sterling grabbed my throat, his fingers digging into my windpipe, shoving me backward onto the dining table. The silver candelabras rattled and crashed to the floor.
"Sign them!" he screamed, his grip tightening, cutting off my air. "Sign them or I’ll end you right here! I’ll tell the cops you had a postpartum breakdown and attacked me!"
I couldn't breathe. The room began to spin, black spots dancing across my vision. My hands clawed at his wrists, but his weight was too much.
Suddenly, the dining room window shattered inward in a shower of glittering glass.
"Police! Don't move!"
Jory lunged from behind the velvet drapes, his entire weight crashing into Sterling, tackling him off me. They hit the floor with a heavy, bone-shattering thud. Sterling fought like a wild animal, punching and kicking, but Jory was faster, stronger, and driven by a quiet fury that had been building for days.
Within seconds, Jory had Sterling pinned to the floor, his knee pressed firmly into the small of his back, his handcuffs clicking sharply around his wrists.
"Richard Sterling Croft," Jory growled, his voice vibrating with anger. "You are under arrest for felony kidnapping, extortion, bank fraud, and attempted murder."
Sterling gasped for air against the polished wood, blood dripping from a cut on his cheek where the glass had sliced him. He looked up, his eyes wild with a final, desperate arrogance.
"It doesn't matter!" Sterling laughed, spitting blood onto the floor. "You can't prove anything! And even if you lock me up... the baby is in a warehouse with a battery that has less than thirty minutes of charge left! If I don't call them and tell them to plug it in... she dies!"
My phone in my blazer pocket buzzed.
I pulled it out with shaking fingers. It was a text message from an encrypted federal server.
I looked down at the screen, and a single, beautiful tear slipped down my cheek, splashing onto the glass.
The text read:
SWAT team has secured the warehouse. Fallon is in custody. Clara is safe, warm, and in the ambulance on her way back to Mercy Memorial. She is breathing on her own.

I stood tall, my white executive suit slightly disheveled but my head held higher than it had ever been. I walked over to where my husband lay pinned to the floor, looking down at him with a detachment that was absolute.
"The warehouse is secure, Sterling," I said, my voice carrying the quiet, unbreakable power of a mother who had just won her war. "My daughter is safe. And you are going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete box."
