Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark & The Wolf’s Vow

The morning brought sunlight filtering through heavy crimson drapes, illuminating the vast estate in warm gold.
True to Dominic’s word, Dr. Catherine Vance arrived precisely at 7:00 AM with a mobile ultrasound unit and a team of top-tier nurses. By noon, Lena had undergone a comprehensive biopsy inside the estate's private medical suite.
"It’s a Stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma," Dr. Vance explained quietly, showing Lena the digital scans on a tablet. Dominic stood silently near the window, his arms crossed over his broad chest. "The good news, Lena, is that it has not spread to your lymph nodes. Because we caught it now, targeted chemotherapy followed by a minor surgical removal will give you a ninety-five percent survival rate."
Lena leaned back against the pillows, tears blurring her vision. For months, she had lived under the silent execution sentence of poverty—knowing something was killing her, yet unable to buy the medicine to stop it.
"When do we start?" Dominic asked the doctor.
"Immediately," Dr. Vance replied. "Her first infusion can begin this afternoon."
"Do it," Dominic said without hesitation.
Later that afternoon, after her first treatment left her mildly fatigued, Lena walked down the wide mahogany hallway to Lily’s room.
The door was slightly ajar. Inside, the little girl sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, holding a small plush wolf. When she saw Lena standing in the doorway, her pale face lit up with a brilliant, genuine smile.
"Lena!" Lily cried softly, stretching her small arms out.
Lena rushed to her bedside, carefully hugging the child, mindful of her bandaged ribs. "How are you feeling, little bird?"
"My chest hurts a little, but Daddy said you're staying here forever now," Lily whispered, clutching Lena’s wrist. Her silver-blue eyes sparkled. "Is that true? Are you going to be my friend?"
"I'm right here," Lena promised, sitting on the edge of the mattress, smoothing Lily’s blonde hair back. "I'm not going anywhere."
"Look what I made you," Lily said, pulling a drawing from beneath her blanket. It showed two figures under a dark sky—a tall woman in a pale blue sweater holding hands with a little girl under a golden wolf banner.
Tears pricked Lena's eyes. "It's beautiful, Lily."
As night fell over the estate, a violent thunderstorm rolled across Lake Michigan. Lightning flashed across the sky, casting long, dramatic shadows through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
At midnight, unable to sleep due to the nausea from her treatment, Lena walked down the quiet corridors to check on Lily.
As she approached the nursery wing, she noticed something wrong. The two armed guards usually stationed outside Lily's door were absent. The electronic keycard lock on the security door was glowing green—unlocked.
Instinct, honed by sixteen years of surviving Chicago's roughest neighborhoods, screamed in Lena's mind.
She slipped off her slippers, moving silently across the carpet. She crept into Lily’s dimly lit bedroom.
A dark figure stood over the sleeping child's bed, holding a small syringe filled with clear fluid.
"Get away from her!" Lena screamed.
Without thinking, Lena launched herself across the room. She tackled the intruder from behind, her weight throwing the intruder off balance. The syringe flew from the person's hand, shattering against the nightstand.
The intruder—a man wearing a black tactical suit and a face mask—turned and struck Lena across the face with a gloved fist. The blow sent her crashing against the wall, pain exploding in her jaw.
"Mind your own business, gutter rat," the man hissed, drawing a suppressed pistol from his holster.
Before he could raise the weapon, the bedroom door exploded inward.
Dominic Rosetti charged into the room like an enraged beast. He caught the assassin’s gun arm, twisting it until the bones cracked with a sickening snap. The gun fell to the floor. Dominic grabbed the intruder by the throat, driving him violently into the floorboards, pinning him down with a knee to the chest.
Security guards flooded the room a second later, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter.
Dominic pulled off the intruder’s mask.
It was Thomas—Victor Rosetti’s personal bodyguard and driver.
Dominic’s breathing was heavy, his eyes burning with an apocalyptic rage. "Thomas... who ordered you into my daughter's room?"
Thomas spat blood onto the rug, grinning maliciously. "Your brother sends his regards, Dominic. He said the wolf syndicate belongs to a real killer, not a soft fool who lets waitresses influence his house!"
Dominic didn't say a word. He looked over at Lena, who was sitting against the wall, holding her bruised cheek, her body shaking from adrenaline. Then he looked at Lily, who was crying in her bed.
"Vance!" Dominic roared to his head of security. "Find my brother. Lock down every exit of this estate. If Victor attempts to leave, shoot him where he stands!"
Dominic walked over to Lena, dropping to one knee. His large, warm hands gently took her face, inspecting the bruise on her cheek. His touch was unbelievably gentle compared to the violence he had just displayed.
"You took a punch for my daughter," Dominic whispered, his voice trembling with emotion he had spent years hiding. "You saved her twice."

"She’s... she's just a baby, Dominic," Lena choked out, leaning into his touch unconsciously. "I couldn't let him hurt her."
Dominic pulled her into his chest, holding her tight while security cleared the room. "No one touches you again, Lena. I swear it on my life."
