Chapter 1 - The Cold Dawn of Consequences

The high-end champagne tasted like ashes on Dominic Vance’s tongue.

The glass shattered against the marble kitchen floor of the Vance estate, dark vintage bubbly soaking into the imported rug. Beside him, Paige, wearing one of Audrey’s silk robes that she had casually taken from the master bedroom closet, gasped and took a step back.

“Dominic? What is it? What did the doctor say?” Paige asked, her voice high and annoying.

Dominic didn't answer. His knees felt like water. His brain refused to process the two brutal sentences that had just shattered his reality.

Your wife was pregnant. She lost the baby... and the fertility tests confirm you are permanently infertile.

His hand trembled violently as he picked his phone up off the floor. The screen was cracked, but the text notification illuminated the darkened living room with blinding clarity:

Audrey: Enjoy the family you chose.

“No... no, that’s impossible,” Dominic muttered, his face turning an ash-gray color. “She was taking birth control. She told me she wasn't ready...”

Victoria Vance walked into the kitchen wearing a velvet dressing gown, her silver hair perfectly styled even at midnight. She held a crystal glass of scotch, her expression filled with arrogant satisfaction.

“What is all this noise, Dominic?” Victoria sneered, looking disdainfully at the spilled champagne on the rug. “Is that dramatic girl still calling from the hospital? I told you, she probably just tripped over her own clumsy feet on the stairs. She’s trying to guilt-trip you so you won't file for divorce.”

Dominic turned slowly to face his mother. For thirty years, he had worshipped her. He had let her manage his life, dictate his marriage, and belittle Audrey at every family dinner.

“She was pregnant, Mom,” Dominic said, his voice a hoarse, broken whisper.

Victoria paused, her glass stopping halfway to her lips. “What?”

“Audrey was eight weeks pregnant,” Dominic roared, his voice cracking with a terrifying mix of grief and horror. “She lost the baby when she fell down the stairs! Our baby! The heir you’ve been demanding for three years!”

Victoria’s posture stiffened slightly, a momentary shadow of shock crossing her face before her habitual cold arrogance reasserted itself. “Well... how was I supposed to know? She didn't say anything! Besides, you’re young, Dominic. You and Paige will have plenty of children. Proper children, from a family with actual stature, not some penniless orphan whose father died broke.”

Dominic let out a hollow, terrifying laugh. He stared at his mother as if seeing her for the very first time.

“There won't be any other children, Victoria,” Dominic whispered, the word Mom dying on his lips. “The doctor gave me the test results from last month. I am permanently infertile. That baby... that baby Audrey was carrying... was the only child I will ever have in my life.”

The room went dead silent.

Paige’s jaw dropped. She slowly backed away from Dominic, her mind instantly calculating the sudden, catastrophic devaluation of her prize.

Victoria’s Scotch glass slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the marble floor right beside the ruined champagne. Her face drained of all color, her royal composure evaporating into sheer, unadulterated horror.

“No...” Victoria whimpered, clutching her chest. “No! My bloodline... the Vance legacy...”

Before anyone could say another word, the sharp, authoritative sound of heavy knocks echoed through the double mahogany front doors of the mansion.

It wasn't a polite visitor's knock. It was the rhythmic, unyielding pound of law enforcement.

Dominic stumbled to the foyer and pulled open the heavy door. Standing on the porch were four uniformed officers from the state police, flanked by a tall woman wearing a sharp charcoal suit holding a leather briefcase.

It was Sophia Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Cross Legal Holdings—the most feared asset protection firm in the state.

“Dominic Vance?” the lead police officer asked calmly.

“Yes... what is this?” Dominic stammered.

Sophia Sterling stepped forward, her eyes as cold and unforgiving as glacial ice. She pulled a thick stack of legal notices from her briefcase.

“I am Sophia Sterling, legal counsel representing Audrey Vance,” Sophia announced, her voice carrying cleanly through the massive foyer. “I am here to serve you with a formal petition for divorce, an emergency restraining order based on severe domestic violence and felony assault, and an immediate Notice of Eviction.”

Victoria hurried into the foyer, her voice rising into an indignant shriek. “Eviction?! Are you insane?! This is my house! The Vance Mansion has been in our family for—”

“This mansion does not belong to the Vance family, Mrs. Vance,” Sophia interrupted smoothly, handing a red-stamped document to the lead officer. “This property is owned 100% by Apex Global Investments. And as of 11:00 PM tonight, Apex Global has revoked your lease due to breach of corporate terms and initiated asset recovery.”

Dominic felt his head spinning. “Apex Global? That’s the private investment firm that bailed out Vance Construction two years ago! What does that have to do with Audrey?!”

Sophia Sterling allowed herself a small, razor-sharp smile that terrified Dominic to his absolute core.

“Audrey Vance is the sole owner and Chairwoman of Apex Global Investments, Mr. Vance,” Sophia revealed softly. “She didn't marry you for your money. She saved your company with hers. And now... she is taking everything back.”
