Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

Six months later.
The city had moved on, but for Dominic Vance, time had stopped on the night Audrey vanished.
He lived in a cramped, dark, one-bedroom apartment in a dilapidated suburb on the edge of the city. The Vance mansion had been sold at public auction by Apex Global, with every dollar of the proceeds donated to a pediatric medical charity dedicated to high-risk pregnancies.
His luxury cars had been repossessed. His bank accounts were empty, drained to pay off the massive legal debts accrued during the corporate collapse. He now worked twelve-hour shifts as a low-level site supervisor for a rival construction firm—the very people he used to mock at country club dinners.
Paige had abandoned him three days after the company froze, moving to Miami with a wealthy older nightclub owner.
Victoria was currently residing in the State Women’s Correctional Facility, serving an eight-year sentence after her defense team failed to disprove the forensic evidence and security footage Sophia Sterling had submitted to the court. Every time Dominic visited her behind the heavy glass partition, she did nothing but scream at him, blaming him for not protecting her, her mind consumed by bitter, toxic delusion.
Dominic had lost thirty pounds. His face was hollow, his eyes sunken. Every night, he sat alone in his tiny apartment with a bottle of cheap whiskey, staring at the only photograph he had left of Audrey—a small, unpretentious picture taken on a public beach during their second anniversary.
She was wearing a simple cotton dress, her dark hair blowing in the sea breeze, her smile radiating a gentle, unconditional warmth that he had completely failed to appreciate.
His phone buzzed on the scarred wooden table.
It was an email notification from a private investigator he had spent his last remaining savings to hire four months ago.
Dominic’s hands shook as he opened the message.
From: Vanguard Investigations Subject: Target Location: Audrey Avery
Mr. Vance, We have located Miss Audrey Avery (formerly Vance). She has officially reclaimed her maiden name and completely severed all ties to her previous identity. She is currently residing in Zurich, Switzerland, serving as the active Global Chairwoman of the Avery International Foundation.
Attached to the email was a single high-resolution photograph taken three days prior outside a grand glass-and-steel skyscraper in downtown Zurich.
Dominic stared at the image, a choked sob tearing through his throat.
Audrey stood on the wide granite steps of the foundation’s global headquarters. She wore a tailored burgundy wool coat, her dark hair styled in an elegant, regal wave. Her posture was tall, proud, and commanding. She looked breathtakingly beautiful—a woman who had risen from the ashes of unimaginable trauma to claim her rightful throne.
Beside her stood a tall, distinguished man with silver-streaked hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. He was holding an umbrella over her head to shield her from the light mountain rain, his expression filled with profound respect and protective devotion.
Dominic recognized him immediately: Gabriel Sterling, the elder brother of Sophia Sterling and the Chief Operating Officer of the global Avery estate.
In the photograph, Audrey was smiling—not the timid, quiet smile she had worn while serving tea to Victoria in the Vance estate, but a brilliant, triumphant smile of a woman who was entirely free.
Dominic clutched the phone to his chest, sinking to his knees on the cold, linoleum floor of his rented room, weeping hysterically in the dark.

She hadn't just survived. She had soared.
And he was left behind in the dirt of his own making, condemned to spend the rest of his life remembering that he had traded a queen for a handful of dust.
