Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The morning sun broke over the city, but inside the corporate boardrooms of Vance Construction, the atmosphere felt like an apocalyptic blizzard.

Dominic hadn't slept a single second. He sat at the head of the mahogany conference table in his ruined tuxedo from the night before, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot. Beside him sat Victoria, wearing a dark coat, her face tightly compressed in a mask of paranoid fury.

Sitting across from them were six corporate attorneys, three bank executives, and the chief financial officer of Vance Construction, Mark Higgins.

Mark dropped a thick, leather-bound financial dossier onto the table with a heavy thud.

“It’s over, Dominic,” Mark said, his voice filled with exhaustion. “We received official notification from the state banking authority at 6:00 AM. Every corporate account, every credit line, and every operating account held by Vance Construction has been frozen by order of Apex Global Investments.”

“They can't do that!” Victoria yelled, slamming her diamond-encrusted hand onto the table. “We own forty percent of this company! Dominic is the CEO!”

“You owned thirty-eight percent, Mrs. Vance,” Mark corrected her coldly. “Apex Global owned sixty-two percent. Under the terms of the bailout agreement Dominic signed two years ago—terms I begged him to read carefully—Apex held absolute voting control and the right to liquidate corporate assets in the event of moral turpitude, criminal investigation, or personal insolvency.”

Dominic stared at his hands, his voice trembling. “I signed it without reading the fine print... because the representative from Apex told me it was standard boilerplate. I thought... I thought Apex was owned by a hedge fund in London!”

“The hedge fund in London was a subsidiary of the Avery Estate Trust,” Sophia Sterling’s voice echoed from the door.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Sophia walked in, flanked by two private investigators carrying heavy cardboard boxes filled with corporate audit files. Behind her stood two representatives from the District Attorney’s Office.

“The Avery Estate Trust?” Victoria stammered, her eyes widening in horror. “That... that’s the trust built by Marcus Avery! The shipping billionaire!”

“Yes, Mrs. Vance,” Sophia said, leaning over the table and placing a certified copy of Marcus Avery’s will in front of Victoria. “Marcus Avery was Audrey’s father. When he died four years ago, he left his entire $80 million fortune to his only daughter, Audrey. Because she knew how greedy and status-obsessed your family was, she hid her identity, created Apex Global, and lived in your house as a simple 'orphan' to see if your son truly loved her for who she was.”

Dominic buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, agonizing sob.

Every insult he had hurled at Audrey flashed through his mind like a burning whip.

“You’re lucky my family took you in.” “You bring nothing to this marriage.” “My mother built this empire, you’re just a guest in it.”

It was all a lie. He was the beggar. His mother was the parasite. Audrey had been the queen who quietly provided the roof over their heads, the luxury cars in their driveway, and the payroll that kept his workers fed.

“Where is she?” Dominic cried, looking up at Sophia with desperate, tear-stained eyes. “Please, Sophia... let me see her! Let me explain! I didn't know about the baby! I didn't know my mother pushed her!”

“You will never see Audrey again, Mr. Vance,” Sophia said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality. “And as for your mother... she won't have to worry about finding a new mansion to live in.”

Sophia turned to the two representatives from the District Attorney’s Office.

“Detective Davis,” Sophia said smoothly. “This is Victoria Vance. As proven by the emergency room forensic report, the security footage recovered from the hallway of the Vance estate, and the medical intake charts from Dr. Alexander Reed, she intentionally assaulted an eight-week pregnant woman, pushing her down a flight of sixteen marble stairs and causing the death of an unborn child.”

The detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for Aggravated Assault, Felony Reckless Endangerment, and Involuntary Manslaughter,” Detective Davis announced.

Victoria shrieked, jumping out of her chair and scrambling backward toward the window. “No! Get away from me! Dominic, do something! Call our lawyers! I am a Vance! You can't put me in handcuffs!”

“You’re not a Vance anymore, Victoria,” Mark Higgins muttered, shaking his head in disgust as he picked up his briefcase. “You’re a criminal. And Vance Construction is declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy effective immediately.”

As the officers grabbed Victoria’s arms, pulling her hands behind her back while she screamed and cursed Audrey’s name, Dominic sat frozen in his chair.

His company was dead. His fortune was gone. His mother was going to prison. His bloodline was ended forever.
