Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary in Zurich

Two years later.
The spring sun warmed the terraced gardens of the Avery International Pediatric Sanctuary in Zurich, Switzerland.
Nestled along the serene shores of Lake Zurich, the state-of-the-art medical and recovery complex was surrounded by blooming lavender, white cherry blossoms, and crisp alpine air. Children’s laughter echoed across the wide green lawns as young patients in recovery played under the watchful eyes of top pediatric specialists.
In the center of the garden stood a beautiful marble monument—a gentle statue of a mother holding an open dove, bathed in sunlight.
At the base of the statue was an inscription carved in gold lettering:
In Memory of the Unborn. May Every Child Find Sanctuary, Honor, and Unconditional Love.
Audrey walked through the garden, holding a clipboard containing the foundation’s annual global outreach expansion plan. Beside her walked Gabriel Sterling, holding two cups of warm tea.
“The board approved the new pediatric trauma centers in South America this morning, Audrey,” Gabriel said, handing her a tea cup with a warm, genuine smile. “We’re officially operating in fourteen countries.”
“Thank you, Gabriel,” Audrey said softly, taking a sip. “We couldn't have done it without your legal team securing the international grants.”
Gabriel looked at her carefully, his dark eyes filled with deep, unwavering affection. Over the past three years, he had stood by her side through every legal battle, every corporate expansion, and every step of her emotional healing. He had never pushed her, never demanded anything in return, offering only quiet strength, absolute loyalty, and profound respect.
“You look peaceful today, Audrey,” Gabriel noted softly, stopping beside the marble statue.
“I am peaceful, Gabriel,” Audrey replied, looking out over the clear blue waters of Lake Zurich. “For the first time in my life, I don't feel the weight of the past holding me down.”
Gabriel reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He held it in his palm, looking into her eyes with steady, quiet devotion.
“I know you promised yourself you would never let anyone control your life again, Audrey,” Gabriel said softly, his voice rich with sincerity. “And I would never ask you to change that. I don't want to own your world. I just want to stand beside you while you build it.”
Audrey looked at the box, then up into Gabriel’s sharp, kind eyes.
Unlike Dominic, Gabriel didn't need her wealth to feel powerful. He was an accomplished, brilliant man who admired her intelligence, respected her strength, and honored her boundaries.
Audrey smiled—a brilliant, genuine smile that lit up her entire face—and gently placed her hand over his.
“Open it,” she whispered softly.
Inside the box lay a simple, exquisitely cut emerald ring, resting on white velvet.

“It’s beautiful, Gabriel,” Audrey said, tears of pure joy glistening in her hazel eyes. “Yes... I will stand beside you.”
Gabriel slipped the ring onto her finger, lifting her hand to his lips, sealing a partnership built not on secrets, vanity, or greed, but on absolute trust, mutual respect, and shared purpose.
