Chapter 3 - The Gala of KnivesOver the next three weeks, Tessa’s world transformed completely.

She was no longer Tessa the waitress. She was relocated to a high-security luxury apartment in the Back Bay, fully paid for by Moretti Logistics. She was given an unlimited corporate expense account, a private driver named Giancarlo, and a salary that allowed her to pay off her mother’s remaining medical debts in a single bank transfer.
She spent her days at Matteo’s side, deciphering coded ledgers, translating international port agreements from Marseille, Genoa, and Hamburg, and identifying millions of dollars in embezzled funds that Matteo’s previous advisors had missed.
She became indispensable to him.
And with every passing day, the professional boundary between them dissolved into something much deeper, warmer, and far more dangerous.
They ate dinner together every night in his private dining room at the top of the tower. They talked for hours—not about crime or money, but about art, literature, the winding streets of Florence, and the heavy burden of carrying a family legacy on young shoulders.
Matteo showed her a side of himself no one else in Boston saw: a man who loved classical opera, who secretly sketched architectural designs in his leather notebooks, and who hated the violence of his life but accepted it as his duty to keep his people safe.
"My father was a cruel man," Matteo admitted one rainy evening, standing beside her on his balcony, wrapping his heavy cashmere coat around her shoulders to shield her from the cold wind. "He ruled by fear. I don't want to rule by fear, Tessa. But in this city, if you show softness, they eat you alive."
"Smartness isn't softness, Matteo," Tessa whispered, looking up into his dark, handsome face. "You don't need to be a monster to be powerful. You just need to be three steps ahead of them."
Matteo looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an intense, raw adoration. He reached out, his long fingers gently stroking her jawline. "You are my three steps ahead, bellissima."
He leaned down and kissed her—a soft, slow, intoxicating kiss that tasted of rich espresso and old wine. Tessa closed her eyes, melting into his warmth, her hands clutching the lapels of his jacket, realizing with a sudden, terrifying clarity that she was falling madly in love with a mafia boss.
However, their growing bond did not go unnoticed.
On a cold Friday night in November, the Boston harbor elite gathered for the annual Maritime Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel. It was a glittering event where dirty money washed itself in black-tie luxury, attended by politicians, judges, business tycoons, and crime lords.
Matteo walked into the grand ballroom with Tessa on his arm.
She looked breathtaking. She wore a floor-length dark emerald silk gown that clung to her curves, her dark hair styled in an elegant, intricate bun, a diamond necklace glittering against her pale collarbone—a gift from Matteo that afternoon.
The room fell silent as they entered. Men in tuxedos whispered behind their hands; women in designer dresses stared with jealous eyes. The former waitress was now standing beside the king of the city.
At the head table sat Don Carmine Marcone, surrounded by his family and corrupt city officials. Beside Carmine sat a young, beautifully dressed woman with sharp features and an arrogant sneer—his daughter, Lucia Marcone.
As Matteo and Tessa took their seats at a VIP table, Lucia approached, holding a glass of champagne.
"Matteo," Lucia purred, her eyes scanning Tessa with cruel contempt. "I see you brought a guest. I was surprised to hear you hired a new advisor. Word on the street was that she used to wipe spilled marinara sauce off the tables at Il Cavallo Bianco."
A quiet ripple of snickers echoed from the nearby tables.
Tessa felt a hot flush of shame rise up her neck, but she didn't bow her head. She held her glass of champagne steady.
Matteo’s face turned to marble. He began to stand up, his jaw set, but Tessa gently laid her hand over his wrist, arresting his movement.
She looked up at Lucia, offering a cool, dazzling smile.
"Signorina Marcone," Tessa said in flawless, aristocratic Italian, her voice echoing clearly enough for the surrounding tables to hear. "It is true. I worked at Il Cavallo Bianco. I cleaned tables, I carried trays, and I earned an honest living while completing my master's degree in linguistics at Florence."
Tessa stood up gracefully, her emerald silk dress rustling softly. She took a step toward Lucia.
"And while wiping those tables," Tessa continued smoothly, switching to high-society Neapolitan, "I had the privilege of serving your father three weeks ago. I couldn't help but notice his personal tax accounts—specifically the off-shore holdings in Curacao that he uses to pay off his gambling debts in Atlantic City. Would you like me to translate those ledgers for the federal prosecutor sitting at table 4, or shall we talk about your dress?"
Lucia’s face went completely white. She took an instinctual step backward, her champagne spilling slightly over her fingers.
The surrounding crowd gasped. Table 4—where U.S. Attorney Richard Vance was sitting—turned to look directly at Carmine Marcone.
Carmine slammed his glass down, glaring at his daughter. "Lucia! Sit down and shut your mouth!"
Lucia scurried back to her table like a whipped dog.
May you like
Matteo let out a low, deep chuckle. He stood up, wrapped a strong arm around Tessa’s waist, and pulled her close, kissing her cheek right in front of the entire room.
"You are lethal, my love," he whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "Absolutely lethal."
