Chapter 5 - The Siege of Beacon HillThe power inside the 100 Federal Street tower suddenly cut out, plunging the top floor into darkness, illuminated only by the red emergency backup lights and the flashes of lightning from the blizzard outside.

"Giancarlo!" Matteo shouted into his radio as he pulled Tessa behind his reinforced oak desk. "Report!"

"Boss! Carmine’s got twenty men in the main lobby!" Giancarlo’s voice crackled through static over the speaker. "They killed the night guards! They’ve overridden the elevator security! They’re coming up!"

"Get the men from the docks to block the underground garage," Matteo ordered coldly. "We bottleneck them on the forty-fifth floor."

Matteo opened a hidden panel beneath his desk, pulling out two heavy tactical handguns and several spare magazines. He handed a small, lightweight Beretta to Tessa.

Tessa stared at the weapon. Her hands were shaking. "Matteo... I’m a linguist. I translate Latin roots. I don't shoot people."

Matteo took her face in his hands, pressing his forehead against hers, his dark eyes burning with fierce, absolute devotion.

"Listen to me, mia vita," he murmured, his voice steadying her racing heart. "You are the smartest, strongest woman I have ever known. I am not going to let them touch a hair on your head. But if anyone steps through that door who isn't me or Giancarlo... you pull this trigger. Understand?"

Tessa took a deep, shuddering breath, her fingers tightening around the cold steel grip. "I understand."

DING.

The elevator doors at the end of the long executive hallway chimed.

Matteo stepped out from behind the desk, standing in the middle of the dark room like an ancient warrior guarding his sanctuary.

Heavy boots stomped down the carpeted hallway. Five armed men in heavy winter coats, led by Carmine Marcone himself, kicked open the double mahogany doors of the office.

"Matteo!" Carmine roared, raising an automatic rifle. "It’s over, boy! Your mole opened the front door! Boston belongs to the Marcones!"

"My mole is dead on the floor, Carmine," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stood alone in the dim red light. "And you just walked into a kill box."

"Kill box?" Carmine laughed mockingly. "You got no men up here! Just you and your little scholar—"

Before Carmine could finish his sentence, Tessa’s voice boomed from the overhead office intercom system.

She had crawled through the side service access behind the desk, reaching the central control room panel.

"Sezione quattro, Protocollo Nero!" Tessa’s voice echoed through the high-grade speakers in crisp, authoritative Italian. "Attivare blocco di emergenza!"

She slammed her hand onto the red emergency lockdown button.

Heavy, three-inch-thick steel security shutters blasted down from the ceiling frames, sealing every window and door in the penthouse instantly, trapping Carmine and his four men inside the main office with Matteo.

Carmine’s men panicked, spinning around as the heavy steel walls slammed shut behind them, cutting off their escape route.

"What the hell?!" Carmine screamed.

In the confusion, Matteo struck.

He moved through the shadows like a panther. Three shots echoed in rapid succession.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Carmine’s three lead enforcers dropped to the carpet, disarmed and neutralized before they even realized where the fire was coming from.

Carmine scrambled backward, dropping his rifle, pulling a sidearm and aiming it wildly toward the control room door where Tessa stood.

"You bitch!" Carmine yelled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Carmine!" Matteo roared.

Carmine turned his head just in time to see Matteo’s heavy fist coming straight for his face.

The blow landed with devastating force, shattering Carmine’s nose and jaw. Carmine crashed into the glass coffee table, spraying blood and shattered glass across the floor, groaning in agony as Matteo stepped over him, placing a heavy boot directly on Carmine's chest.

Matteo pressed the barrel of his gun against Carmine’s forehead.

"You threatened my city," Matteo whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying rage. "You threatened my business. But worst of all... you brought guns into the room where she works."

"Matteo... please..." Carmine choked out, weeping, coughing blood. "Don't... we can make a deal..."

Tessa stepped out of the control room, holding her small Beretta at her side. She walked over to Matteo, looking down at the broken, groveling man on the floor.

"No deals, Carmine," Tessa said in cold, flawless Calabrese. "La tua casa è caduta." ("Your house has fallen.")

Matteo looked up at Tessa. The murderous fury in his eyes softened the moment his gaze met hers.

He didn't pull the trigger.

Instead, he looked down at Carmine. "Federal agents are waiting in the lobby right now, Carmine. Thanks to Tessa’s digital trail, your entire off-shore account network has been transmitted to the U.S. Attorney. You aren't dying tonight. You’re going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal prison."

The heavy steel doors whirred open as Giancarlo and ten armed Moretti enforcers, accompanied by federal agents, burst into the penthouse.

As the agents handcuffed Carmine and dragged him away, the storm outside began to clear, revealing the early pink light of dawn breaking over the Boston harbor.
