Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LedgerThe humiliation at the gala pushed Carmine Marcone over the edge.

Two weeks later, a storm raged over the city. Heavy snow blotted out the harbor, freezing the streets into dangerous sheets of black ice.

Inside the Moretti penthouse, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Tessa sat at the large conference table, surrounded by stacks of financial records that had just been seized from a raided Moretti warehouse in East Boston.

A anonymous tip had been leaked to the FBI that morning, claiming that Moretti Logistics was smuggling unlicensed firearms inside shipments of Italian marble. The federal agents had frozen three of Matteo’s main bank accounts pending a grand jury investigation.

Matteo paced near the window, his phone pressed to his ear, his voice harsh as he shouted at his legal team.

"Find out who signed the search warrant!" Matteo barked. "I don't care if it costs fifty thousand! I want the judge's name by noon!"

He slammed the phone down, running a hand through his dark hair, looking visibly exhausted and stressed for the first time since Tessa had met him.

Tessa didn't speak. Her eyes were glued to a set of shipping manifests from the East Boston warehouse. Something wasn't adding up.

"Matteo," she called out softly.

He stopped pacing, taking a deep breath to calm his temper before turning to her. "What is it, Tessa? Did you find something?"

"This tip wasn't random," Tessa said, pointing her pen at three columns of serial numbers. "Look at these registration codes. They aren't Italian. They’re written in a specialized alphanumerical cipher used exclusively by the Swiss customs authority in Basel."

Matteo walked over, leaning over her shoulder, smelling her sweet jasmine perfume that always managed to soothe his frayed nerves. "Swiss customs? We don't import through Switzerland. We go through Rotterdam and Genoa."

"Exactly," Tessa said, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she pulled up internal Moretti employee records. "Someone inside your organization changed the manifest destination codes two days ago. They deliberately routed the marble crates through Basel to trigger an automatic international red flag."

Matteo’s eyes darkened into pitch. "A mole."

"Not just a mole," Tessa whispered, pulling up a digital signature stamp at the bottom of the altered file. "Look at the authorization key."

The screen displayed an encrypted security code: User_M_Vance.

Matteo froze. His breath caught in his throat.

Marco—his twitchy lieutenant who had been with his family for twelve years—stood near the door, his hand imperceptibly sliding toward his belt.

"Marco," Matteo said softly, without turning around.

"Yeah, boss?" Marco asked, his voice tighter than usual.

"Why is your sister’s maiden name—Vance—listed as the administrative override on our East Boston freight server?"

Silence descended on the room like a heavy stone.

In a split second, Marco pulled a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket, aiming it directly at the back of Tessa’s head.

"Don't move, Matteo!" Marco screamed, his eyes wild, sweating profusely. "Don't you fucking move! Carmine offered me three million dollars and a seat at the table in New York! You’re soft, Matteo! You’re letting a damn waitress run this family!"

Tessa sat frozen, the cold realization of the gun pointed at her spine making her blood run cold.

Matteo didn't move a muscle. He didn't look back at Marco. His eyes remained locked on Tessa, his voice dropping into a eerie, terrifying calm.

"Marco," Matteo said softly. "You’ve known me since I was twelve years old. You know what I do to traitors."

"You ain't doing shit to me!" Marco yelled, stepping backward toward the exit. "Carmine’s men are downstairs right now! They’re taking the lobby! By midnight, the Moretti family is dead!"

"Tessa," Matteo whispered, his dark eyes communicating a silent message to her. "Drop."

Tessa didn't hesitate. She threw herself off the chair, dropping flat onto the thick carpet.

BANG!

A gunshot shattered the air.

Matteo had spun around with blinding speed, pulling a silenced Walther PPK from an ankle holster he carried inside his trouser leg.

The bullet struck Marco cleanly through the throat. Marco dropped his gun, clutching his neck, letting out a wet gasp before collapsing onto the floor, motionless.

Matteo didn't waste a second. He rushed to Tessa, pulling her up from the floor and wrapping her tightly in his arms, checking her face and body frantically.

"Are you hit?! Tessa, look at me! Are you hurt?!"

May you like

"I'm okay! I'm okay!" she gasped, clinging to his shirt.

Below them, the sound of muffled gunfire echoed up through the elevator shaft. Carmine Marcone’s assault had begun.
