Chapter 1 - The Sparks of ResistanceAlessandro Moretti stared at Bella Rossi for a fraction of a second longer than was necessary, his dark eyes taking in every detail of her face—the flush of exertion on her cheeks, the fierce, unyielding light in her brown eyes, and the slight tremor in her hands that she was desperately trying to hide.

"A ribeye, medium-rare," Alessandro said softly, his voice low and rich like velvet wrapped around iron. "And a glass of Macallan 25. Neat."
Bella noted the order on her pad with quick, practiced strokes, maintaining a flawless mask of professional indifference. "Right away, sir."
As she turned to leave, her wrist still tingled from the brief, electric point of contact where she had grabbed him moments prior. No one touched Alessandro Moretti. Everyone knew that. Yet she had not only touched him; she had physically restrained his arm when his temper had flared against the terrified silver-haired man sitting across from him.
Behind the bar, Chloe was practically hyperventilating as she handed Bella the drink tray. "Are you insane, Bella? That was Moretti! He’s had men thrown into the Chicago River for looking at him sideways!"
"He was going to smash a crystal glass into that man’s face in the middle of my section," Bella muttered, setting her jaw as she checked the drink orders. "I have enough problems without turning Table 12 into a crime scene. Besides, Marco’s medical bills are due on Friday. If I get fired for a brawl, we lose our apartment."
"You're playing with fire," Chloe warned, shaking her head. "And guys like Alessandro Moretti don't just burn you. They consume you."
Bella carried the tray back to Table 12. As she set down the Macallan in front of Alessandro, she noticed the older, silver-haired man—Mr. Vance—shaking so violently that his water glass rattled against the mahogany table.
"Mr. Vance," Alessandro said smoothly, swirling his amber liquid without taking his eyes off Bella. "You owe the Moretti Foundation four hundred thousand dollars. You thought you could hide your offshore accounts behind shell corporations in Panama. Did you really think my people wouldn't trace it?"
"Alessandro, please," Vance whimpered, wiping sweat from his brow with a silk handkerchief. "Give me two weeks! Just two weeks to liquidate my assets—"
"You've had six months," Vincent Gallo, the heavy-set enforcer, interjected from the booth’s edge. His voice sounded like grinding gravel. "Mr. Moretti doesn't give extensions."
Bella hesitated by the service station nearby, pretending to organize menus while keeping a close eye on the table. She could feel the suffocating pressure radiating from Alessandro. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. Power rolled off him in waves.
Suddenly, Vance made a desperate, foolish move. Reaching inside his jacket, his hand fumbled toward his inner pocket.
Vincent’s hand moved instantly toward his own coat, but Alessandro raised a single, commanding finger, stopping his enforcer in his tracks. In one fluid motion, Alessandro reached across the table, grabbed Vance by his silk tie, and pulled him forward until their noses were barely an inch apart.
"If you pull a weapon or a pen in my presence without permission, Vance," Alessandro whispered, "I won't just take your assets. I will take everything you have ever cared about."
Vance choked back a sob, his hands freezing in mid-air.
Bella stepped forward impulsively, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Is everything alright with your dinner, gentlemen?" she interrupted, her voice crisp and loud enough to shatter the lethal atmosphere hovering over the table.
Alessandro slowly let go of Vance’s tie, letting the older man slump back into the leather cushion like a deflated balloon. Alessandro turned his head slowly toward Bella, his dark brows drawing together in quiet intrigue.
"You have remarkable timing, Miss..." He looked at the silver pin on her apron. "...Rossi."
"I take pride in my service, Mr. Moretti," Bella replied, meeting his gaze squarely. "And I prefer my dining room kept at a comfortable temperature. Cold threats tend to ruin the palate."
Vincent let out a low, dangerous growl, stepping toward Bella. "Watch your mouth, girl—"
"Back down, Vince," Alessandro commanded without looking away from Bella. A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips. "She has spirit. Rare in a city full of cowards."
He picked up his glass, taking a slow sip of the Macallan. "Tell me, Bella. How much does a waitress at Lucia’s make to risk her neck interfering in business that doesn't concern her?"
"Not enough to watch a man get beaten in front of forty witnesses," Bella said coolly. "Your steak will be out in five minutes."
She turned on her heel and walked away, feeling his intense, penetrating gaze burning into her back all the way to the kitchen doors.
When the shift finally ended at midnight, Bella untied her apron, her body aching with exhaustion. She walked out the kitchen back door into the chilly Chicago alleyway, wrapping her thin coat tightly around her shoulders. The rain had begun to fall in a soft, misty drizzle, slicking the cobblestones.
As she stepped onto the sidewalk of Orchard Street, a sleek, black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up quietly beside the curb. The rear window rolled down, revealing the shadowy silhouette of Alessandro Moretti.
"Get in, Miss Rossi," he said simply.
Bella stopped, her hand tightening around her canvas handbag. "I prefer to take the train, Mr. Moretti."
"It's midnight, it's raining, and the red line is notoriously unsafe at this hour," Alessandro noted, his tone leaving no room for debate. "Besides, we have unfinished business."
"We have no business at all," Bella countered, taking a step back. "I served your dinner. You paid the bill. End of story."
Vincent opened the driver’s side door and stepped out, holding a large black umbrella over Alessandro as the mob boss opened his door and stepped out into the rain. He closed the distance between himself and Bella with lazy, predatory grace until he was standing directly in front of her.
Up close, he smelled of expensive sandalwood, rain, and subtle tobacco. He towered over her, his presence utterly overwhelming.
"You put your hands on me tonight, Bella," Alessandro said, his voice a low vibration that made her skin prickle. "No one touches me without consequences. But I am a reasonable man. I offer you a ride home, or I buy your restaurant and fire you tomorrow morning."
Bella’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes flashed with sudden anger. "You're a bully."
"I am a realist," Alessandro corrected softly. "And right now, you look cold, tired, and remarkably stubborn. Get in the car."

Knowing she couldn't afford to lose her job at Lucia’s—not with Marco’s life hanging in the balance—Bella swallowed her pride, glared at him, and walked past him toward the open leather interior of the luxury sedan.
As she settled into the heated leather seat, she had no idea that stepping into Alessandro Moretti’s world would alter the course of her life forever.
