Chapter 3 - A Dangerous AgreementThat evening, the atmosphere inside Lucia’s was electric. A heavy thunderstorm was rolling over Lake Michigan, pounding rain against the grand glass windows of the restaurant.

Bella walked through her shift in a daze of gratitude and apprehension. Every time the front door opened, her heart skipped a beat, expecting to see the towering frame of Alessandro Moretti step through the foyer.

At 8:30 PM, the front door swung open.

It wasn't Alessandro.

Instead, a group of four men walked in, wearing flashy leather coats and carrying an air of aggressive arrogance. At their head was a man with a jagged scar across his chin—Dominic "The Viper" Varga, a high-ranking lieutenant in the rival Syndicate that controlled the West Side of Chicago.

Mr. Henderson, the manager, looked visibly terrified as he approached them. "Mr. Varga... we don't have a reservation for your group tonight—"

"Shut up, old man," Dominic barked, shoving Henderson aside roughly. "We’re sitting at Table 12."

The entire restaurant grew hushed. Table 12 was strictly recognized as Moretti territory. Seating a rival gang leader there was an act of open provocation.

Bella watched from the service station as Dominic and his men barged into the booth, kicking their feet up on the pristine white tablecloth. Dominic slammed a heavy leather duffel bag onto the table.

"Hey! Waitress!" Dominic yelled, snapping his fingers loudly at Bella. "Get over here!"

Chloe grabbed Bella’s apron, her eyes wide with terror. "Bella, don't go over there! That’s Dominic Varga! He’s at war with the Moretti family!"

"I have to do my job, Chloe," Bella whispered, her heart racing. "If I don't, he’ll tear this place apart."

Bella smoothed her apron, picked up her notepad, and walked calmly to Table 12. "Good evening. What can I get for you?"

Dominic sneered, his greasy eyes scanning her body with undisguised lust. "Well, aren't you a pretty little thing? Forget the food. Why don't you sit on my lap and tell me what time your shift ends?"

"I'm here to take your food order, sir," Bella replied, keeping her voice as cold as ice. "If you're not hungry, I can bring you the wine list."

One of Dominic’s thugs laughed. "She’s got spit, Boss!"

Dominic’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly snarl. He reached out and grabbed Bella’s wrist tightly, squeezing until her fingers went numb. "Listen to me, bitch. I run this side of Orchard Street now. Moretti is weak. His time is over. You smile at me, or I’ll break this pretty little hand of yours."

Bella gasped in pain, trying to pull away, but Dominic’s grip was like a vise.

"Let go of her," a voice boomed through the restaurant like a thunderclap.

The front doors slammed open. Alessandro Moretti stood in the entryway, flanked by Vincent Gallo and four armed men in dark suits. Rain glistened on Alessandro’s charcoal coat, and his eyes were dark with a lethal, terrifying fury.

The entire restaurant seemed to drop ten degrees. Diners scrambled out of their seats, retreating toward the exits as Moretti’s men locked down the doors.

Dominic didn't let go of Bella’s wrist, using her as a human shield as he reached into his jacket. "Moretti! You're late to your own funeral!"

In a flash of terrifying speed, Alessandro moved across the dining floor. Before Dominic could draw his weapon, Alessandro grabbed a heavy glass wine decanter from a nearby tray and smashed it across Dominic’s arm.

Dominic shrieked in pain, dropping Bella as his bone cracked under the impact.

Vincent and Moretti’s men instantly disarmed Dominic’s thugs, slamming them face-first onto the marble floor.

Alessandro grabbed Dominic by the throat, lifting the grown man off his feet and slamming him brutally against the brick wall behind Table 12. The glass framed artwork shattered, raining shards onto the floor.

"You brought weapons into my restaurant," Alessandro growled, his voice deep, monstrous, and filled with absolute malice. "You threatened my business. But worst of all..." He tightened his grip on Dominic’s throat until the man’s face turned purple. "...you put your filthy hands on my waitress."

Bella watched in horror and awe as Alessandro pulled a silver-plated snub-nosed revolver from his shoulder holster, pressing the cold barrel directly beneath Dominic’s chin.

"Alessandro, stop!" Bella screamed, rushing forward and grabbing his arm just as she had done on the first night. "Don't do this here! Please!"

Alessandro paused, his dark eyes shifting to Bella. He saw the sheer panic in her face—not panic for the thug he was about to execute, but panic for him, and panic for the violence exploding in her sanctuary.

Slowly, Alessandro lowered the gun. He tossed Dominic onto the floor like a sack of trash.

"Take them to the docks," Alessandro commanded Vincent coldly. "Make sure they never walk back into Orchard Street."

Vincent and the enforcers dragged Dominic and his screaming men out through the back exit, leaving the dining room silent, broken, and empty.

Alessandro turned to Bella. He stepped close to her, gently reaching out his gloved hand to touch her bruised wrist. The contrast between his lethal violence a moment ago and his agonizingly gentle touch now was breathtaking.

"Did he break it?" Alessandro asked softly, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.

"No," Bella whispered, her eyes brimming with tears of shock. "I'm okay."

Alessandro looked around at the shattered glass and upturned tables. "Lucia’s is closed for the night. And you are coming with me."

"Alessandro—"

"You're not safe here anymore, Bella," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Dominic knows you matter to me now. He will use you to get to me. Until my men clean up the West Side, you stay under my protection."

Bella looked at the man who had just paid for her brother’s life and shielded her from a violent mobster. She realized with terrifying clarity that her quiet, simple life was gone. She was now drawn directly into the heart of the storm.

"Alright," Bella breathed. "I'll go with you."
