Chapter 5 - The Battle for ChicagoInside the soundproof panic room, Bella paced back and forth like a caged panther. Monitors on the wall showed security camera feeds of the penthouse living room, but several feeds had already gone dark due to damaged wiring.

On the remaining functional camera, she watched in terror as heavy gunfire lit up the opulent living room. Muzzle flashes illuminated the sleek furniture as glass shattered and bullets tore through the walls.

Alessandro moved like a phantom through his home, his tactical training evident in every quick, lethal movement. Beside him, Vincent fired heavy rounds into the entryway, holding off a dozen heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear.

Suddenly, a heavy explosion rocked the wall of the panic room. The camera feed flickered violently.

On the screen, Bella saw Dominic Varga—his arm wrapped in a heavy cast from Alessandro’s previous attack—step into the living room, holding a submachine gun.

"Moretti!" Dominic’s voice echoed weakly through the panic room’s audio receiver. "Show yourself! I know she’s here! I’m going to tear this place down around your ears!"

Alessandro stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, his gun raised. "You should have fled the city, Dominic."

"Not until I take everything from you!" Dominic screamed, opening fire.

Alessandro rolled behind a marble kitchen island as bullets shredded the wood. He returned fire, hitting Dominic’s two lead mercenaries, but a shot from a side angle grazed Alessandro’s thigh, causing him to stumble.

Seeing Alessandro fall, Dominic let out a maniacal laugh, advancing toward the island with his gun leveled. "End of the line, Moretti!"

Inside the panic room, Bella couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't sit behind steel walls while the man who had saved her brother bled for her.

She looked around the panic room, spotting a emergency fire axe mounted on the wall alongside a flare gun. She grabbed the flare gun, checked the breach, and hit the manual override button on the steel door.

The heavy door slid open with a hiss.

Bella slipped out into the smoke-filled library, staying low as she crept into the dining area.

Dominic was standing five feet away from the kitchen island, his submachine gun pointed down at a bleeding, kneeling Alessandro.

"Any last words, Boss?" Dominic sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Dominic!" Bella screamed at the top of her lungs.

Dominic startled, turning his head toward the sound.

In that split second, Bella aimed the flare gun directly at his chest and pulled the trigger.

A blinding, blazing red flare erupted from the barrel, striking Dominic squarely in the chest. The intense heat and chemical flame instantly ignited his tactical vest. Dominic shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon and thrashing wildly as the fire spread.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Alessandro lunged forward from the floor, sweeping Dominic’s legs out from under him. Dominic slammed hard onto the marble floor, the flare rolling away into the non-flammable tiles.

Vincent rushed in from the hallway, firing three precise shots that terminated the remaining attackers entering through the private elevator.

Silence descended upon the destruction of the penthouse, broken only by the heavy breathing of the survivors and the quiet hiss of the fire sprinklers starting up in the foyer.

Alessandro stood up slowly, clutching his bleeding leg. He looked across the smoke-filled room at Bella, who was standing there holding the smoking flare gun, her face streaked with soot and her eyes wide with adrenaline.

Vincent stared at her in utter disbelief. "Holy hell... the waitress just shot a syndicate leader with a flare gun."

Alessandro walked toward her, ignoring the pain in his leg. He reached her, gently taking the flare gun from her hands and tossing it onto the table.

"You are insane," Alessandro breathed, a breathless, wondrous smile breaking across his handsome face. "I told you to stay in the panic room."

"And I told you on the night we met," Bella replied, her voice trembling as she wrapped her arms around his neck, "don't dare me."

May you like

Alessandro pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he held her like a man holding his most precious treasure. "I love you, Bella Rossi," he whispered against her ear, declaring it openly for the first time amidst the ruins of his empire. "God help me, I love you."

Bella squeezed her eyes shut, tears of relief streaming down her cheeks. "I love you too, Alessandro. I love you too."
