Chapter 4 - The Hidden Seam

Adrien didn't speak for a full minute. He stood there in the center of the vast, amber-lit penthouse, the storm raging outside against the glass, processing a betrayal that cut far deeper than high-society gossip or petty bullying.
“Marcus!” Adrien roared toward the private elevator foyer.
Marcus stepped out of the shadows almost instantly, holding a thick, encrypted tactical tablet. “Boss.”
“Pull up the foundation’s Q3 discretionary allocations,” Adrien commanded, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. “Cross-reference every invoice from Atelier Vane with the offshore routing numbers we intercepted from the harbor syndicate last month.”
Marcus didn't blink. He tapped the screen twice, a cold, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Already on it, Mr. Moretti. I didn't want to bring it to you until I had 100% confirmation, but Mrs. Moretti’s little intuition at the boutique this afternoon gave us the missing piece of the puzzle.”
Marcus handed the tablet to Adrien.
I leaned in beside him as the screen illuminated our faces in a harsh blue glow. There, laid out in neat, crimson financial lines, was a staggering web of corruption.
For the past fourteen months, over twelve million dollars had been siphoned from the Civic Foundation’s architectural restoration grants. The money was funneled through Atelier Vane under the guise of “high-end textile conservation materials for historical charity galas.”
And who was listed as the primary institutional signatory authorizing every single purchase?
Emily Moretti.
My name. Forged with a digital signature stamp that mimicked my handwriting down to the precise slant of the capital E.
“They weren't just trying to make me look foolish at the gala,” I whispered, staring at the glowing screen. “They were framing me for embezzlement. If a federal audit ever hit the foundation, the trail would lead straight to the restorer wife who didn't know how to balance a checkbook.”
Adrien’s face turned the color of ash, then hardened into something terrifying. The aura of a billionaire CEO evaporated entirely, leaving behind the apex predator who ruled the underworld of the Great Lakes.
“Vanessa didn't act alone,” Adrien said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet growl. “Atelier Vane is co-owned by Julian Whitmore—Vanessa’s uncle. And my own cousin, Richard Moretti, sits on the foundation’s audit committee.”
He turned to Marcus. “Bring Richard to the basement vault. And pick up Julian Whitmore on his way home from his club. I want them both in the building by midnight.”
“Consider it done, boss,” Marcus said, turning sharply on his heel and disappearing back down the elevator.
Adrien looked down at me, his strong hands sliding up to cup my face, his thumbs gently brushing my cheekbones. His eyes were burning with an intensity that terrified and thrilled me in equal measure.
“You knew,” Adrien whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “When you kept returning the dresses... you didn't just do it because they didn't fit your style. You sensed something was wrong with them.”
“I’m a restorer, Adrien,” I said, offering a faint, melancholic smile. “I spend my life inspecting seams. When a seam is stitched with synthetic thread instead of silk, it screams under tension. Those dresses were too heavy, too stiff in the lining, and the tags were sewn with double-stitched security thread normally used for industrial banking envelopes. Someone was hiding micro-storage chips and encrypted micro-ledgers inside the hemline padding of every single garment you brought home to me.”
Adrien let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh—a sound full of dark appreciation. “My God, Emily. While I thought I was buying you gifts to make you feel comfortable in my world, you were quietly dismantling a syndicate right under my nose.”
“Well,” I said, stepping back and picking up my handbag. “A wife has to make herself useful, doesn't she?”
May you like
“Where are you going?” Adrien asked, grabbing my wrist gently as I turned toward the elevator.
“I’m going home to change,” I said smoothly. “Because if we’re going to dismantle your cousin and Vanessa’s uncle in the basement vault tonight, I refuse to do it in a skirt from last season.”
