Chapter 6 - The Winter Gala

Three months later, the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House was transformed into a winter wonderland of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and shimmering silver lights.

It was the annual Greater Chicago Civic Foundation Gala—the most prestigious social event of the year. The room was packed with four hundred of the city’s elite, clad in tuxedos, diamonds, and designer gowns that cost more than my first car.

At the head table, sitting beside the mayor and the chairman of the Federal Reserve, sat Adrien Moretti.

And beside him, wearing the midnight-blue velvet gown with the square neckline and soft, elegant structure at the waist, sat me.

There were no whispers as I entered the room. No sideways glances. No snide remarks from foundation trustees. The board had been quietly restructured, Richard’s shares had been absorbed into a philanthropic endowment bearing my father’s name, and Vanessa Whitmore had quietly moved to Zurich after her uncle’s financial empire imploded under federal investigation.

As the orchestra swelled into a smooth, classical waltz, Adrien stood up, offered his hand, and led me out onto the center of the polished hardwood dance floor.

He pulled me close, his strong arm wrapping securely around my waist, his warm breath brushing against my hair as we moved in time with the music.

“You look breathtaking tonight, Emily,” he murmured, his voice thick with quiet adoration. “Every eye in this room is on you.”

“Good,” I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder, feeling the solid, unbreakable strength of his embrace. “Let them look. They need to see what a properly constructed marriage looks like when the seams finally hold.”

Adrien laughed softly, spinning me beneath the amber glow of the crystal chandeliers, knowing that our empire—built on truth, restoration, and absolute loyalty—was finally secure.
