Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The office floor felt like it was tilting beneath Mark’s feet. On his smartphone screen, the live feed from the nursery camera continued to stream in crystal-clear definition. His mother, Linda, still held a tight fistful of Sarah’s hair.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you," Linda hissed, her voice a chilling, venomous whisper. "My son works eighty hours a week to provide this luxury for you, and you can’t even keep his house immaculate or his son quiet. You are a parasite, Sarah. If I ever hear you complaining to him again about being 'exhausted,' I will make sure he divorces you and takes Oliver away forever. You know I can do it."

Sarah didn't cry. She didn't rage. She just stood completely paralyzed, her eyes wide with a hollow, long-standing terror. She slowly nodded, her voice barely a breath. "I'm sorry, Linda. Please... let go. You'll wake Oliver."

Linda released her grip with a cruel shove, smoothing down her own blouse as if nothing had happened. "Good. Get the laundry done before Mark gets home."

Mark slammed his laptop shut, his hands shaking so violently he could barely grab his car keys. The pieces of the last six months—the puzzle of his wife’s deteriorating mental state—shattered into a horrific, undeniable picture. Sarah wasn't suffering from severe postpartum depression. She was being systematically abused, terrorized, and gaslit by his own mother while he was away at work, blinded by Linda's lifelong facade of being a "helpful, devoted matriarch."

He sprinted out of the corporate building, ignoring his boss calling after him. The drive home was a blur of adrenaline and agonizing guilt. He had left the woman he loved unprotected in a cage with a monster he called his mother.
