Chapter 2 - The Gun and the MiracleThe metallic click of a firearm slide cocking back sounded like a gunshot in the quiet nursery.

Elena froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She slowly opened her eyes and turned her head toward the doorway.

Standing there, framed by the dim amber hallway light, was Lorenzo Rossi.

He looked terrifying. Dressed in a dark dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his broad shoulders blocked the entire doorway. His face was twisted in a mask of absolute, murderous rage, his dark eyes blazing with a fury that could incinerate steel.

In his right hand, a black Glock 9mm was pointed with terrifying, unwavering precision straight at Elena’s head.

"Put him down," Lorenzo whispered. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the chilling, dead weight of an executioner about to drop the blade. "Step away from the crib. Now."

Elena’s entire body went cold. She couldn't move. If she jerked away, Leo would be startled; if she stayed, Lorenzo might pull the trigger before he realized what was happening.

"Mr. Rossi... please," Elena whispered, her voice trembling violently as tears spilled over her lashes. "Don't shoot. Look at him. Just look at your son."

Lorenzo’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his cheek twitched. He stepped forward into the room, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. He saw a stranger—an unknown maid in a cheap uniform—holding his only surviving child against her chest in the middle of the night. To a paranoid mob leader who had already lost his wife to an assassination, this looked like the ultimate betrayal, an insider threat executing a final blow.

"This is your last warning," Lorenzo growled, his eyes narrowing as he raised the barrel another inch, aiming directly between her eyes. "Drop my son, or I will put a bullet through your skull."

"I'm not hurting him!" Elena cried out, her protective instincts overriding her fear of the weapon aimed at her brain. She adjusted her grip, shielding Leo’s fragile body with her own. "He was starving! The nurse was asleep, and he hasn't eaten in two days! He was dying, Mr. Rossi!"

Lorenzo paused. The sheer conviction in her voice—the raw, maternal desperation ringing through every syllable—halted his finger on the trigger.

His dark eyes dropped from Elena’s tear-stained face down toward the baby in her arms.

For weeks, Lorenzo had watched medical teams swarm this room. He had listened to endless beeping monitors, desperate nurses, and weeping doctors telling him there was nothing more they could do. He had spent every waking moment bracing himself for the phone call telling him his son had followed his mother into the grave.

Right now, in the dim green light of the monitor, Leo wasn't crying.

His tiny hands were kneading against Elena’s chest. His color was flushing from gray to a healthy, warm pink. And the unmistakable sound of rhythmic swallowing filled the silent room.

The heart monitor chimed its steady, unbroken rhythm.

Lorenzo’s breath hitched in his throat. The world seemed to stop spinning on its axis.

Slowly, almost mechanically, the rigid tension left his arms. The heavy Glock trembled for a fraction of a second before he lowered it, letting it drop to his side as if it weighed a thousand pounds.

He stared at the two of them, his broad chest heaving beneath his shirt. The ruthless, untouchable mafia heir—a man who hadn't shed a single tear at his wife’s funeral because grief had frozen him solid—felt a hot, burning sting behind his eyelids.

"He's... he's eating," Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking, sounding broken and shattered for the first time in his life.

"Yes," Elena whispered back, her tears dripping onto Leo’s blanket. "He's eating."

Lorenzo took a slow, hesitant step forward, dropping his weapon onto a nearby table as if it were a venomous snake. He reached out with a large, calloused hand—a hand that had signed death warrants and brokered international syndicates—and gently touched the baby’s tiny, warm foot.

Leo didn't flinch. He just kept feeding, perfectly safe, perfectly nourished.

Lorenzo looked up, his dark, tormented eyes locking onto Elena’s soul. The anger was gone, replaced by a desperate, humbling awe.

"Who... who are you?" Lorenzo asked, his voice barely audible above the hum of the medical equipment.

May you like

"My name is Elena," she answered softly. "I'm just a maid here, Mr. Rossi."

"No," Lorenzo said, shaking his head slowly, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his rugged cheek. "You're not just a maid anymore."
