Chapter 5 - The BreachThe attack came on a freezing Tuesday night when the winter blizzard reached its peak, howling against the estate walls and cutting off the local power grid, forcing the mansion onto its heavy industrial backup generators.

Inside the executive suite, everything was quiet. Leo was fast asleep in his crib, and Elena was sitting by the fireplace reading a book on pediatric nutrition.

Suddenly, the soft ambient hum of the backup generator died.

The lights flickered once, twice, and then went completely pitch black. The emergency red backup strips along the baseboards buzzed to life, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the bedroom walls.

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She stood up instantly, walking over to check on Leo.

Before she could reach the crib, the heavy oak door of the suite was kicked open with a splintering crash.

Three masked men clad in black tactical gear and holding silenced submachine guns swarmed into the room.

"Target secured!" one of them hissed into a comms unit. "Grab the kid and the woman. Boss wants them alive, but move fast before Rossi's guards breach the corridor."

Elena screamed, throwing herself defensively in front of Leo’s crib. "Get away from him!"

"Shut her up!" the lead intruder barked, lunging forward and grabbing Elena roughly by the arm, yanking her away from the crib.

Panic surged through her. She fought back with every ounce of strength she had, scratching, kicking, and screaming, but she was no match for the trained mercenary. Another intruder reached into the crib and scooped up a terrified, crying Leo.

"Got the brat. Let's move—"

Bang.

The crack of a suppressed firearm echoed down the hallway.

The intruder holding Leo froze, his eyes widening in shock before a red bloom spread across his tactical vest and he collapsed heavily onto the Persian rug, dropping the baby safely onto a pile of plush pillows.

"Clear the doorway!" the lead mercenary yelled, pivoting his weapon toward the hall.

Through the red-lit doorway stepped Lorenzo Rossi.

He was wearing a black tactical sweater, blood smeared across his shoulder, holding a Sig Sauer P226 with absolute, icy deadliness. He didn't shout. He didn't hesitate.

He moved like a machine of pure retribution.

Two rapid shots rang out in quick succession. The second mercenary spun around and crashed into the bookshelf.

The lead intruder grabbed Elena by the hair, pressing the cold muzzle of his pistol against her temple. "Drop the gun, Rossi! Drop it, or I blow her brains all over this nursery floor right now!"

Lorenzo stopped dead in his tracks. The pistol in his hand lowered by an inch. The cold, ruthless mafia leader vanished, replaced entirely by a man staring directly into his worst nightmare.

"Let her go," Lorenzo whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, suppressed fury that made the air in the room feel heavy. "If you touch a single hair on her head, I won't just kill you. I will dismantle every single member of the Moretti syndicate down to the last street corner."

The intruder laughed nervously, his hand trembling as he felt the sheer weight of Lorenzo’s threat. "Drop the gun, Rossi! Do it—"

Click.

From the dark shadow behind the doorway, Marcus—who had circled around through the private connecting bath—stepped out silently, raising his weapon.

"Checkmate," Marcus whispered.

Before the intruder could pull the trigger, Marcus fired.

The mercenary’s eyes rolled back, and he slumped sideways, unconscious and bleeding out onto the floor.

The room fell instantly silent, save for little Leo’s frightened wails from the pillows.

Lorenzo dropped his pistol, sprinting across the room. He ignored the bodies, dropped to his knees, and scooped Leo into his arms, checking him frantically for injuries. Finding none, he pulled the baby tight against his chest, breathing heavily.

Then, Lorenzo looked up, his eyes darting across the room until they landed on Elena, who was shaking violently against the wall, clutching her bruised arm.

In two long strides, Lorenzo crossed the room, pulled Elena into his free arm, and crushed them both against his chest in an unbreakable, protective embrace.

"Are you okay?" Lorenzo breathed into her hair, his voice breaking. "Did they hurt you?"

May you like

"I'm... I'm okay," Elena sobbed softly, burying her face in his shoulder. "Leo... is Leo okay?"

"He's safe," Lorenzo whispered, kissing the top of her head. "You're both safe."
