Chapter 3 - The Secret ArrangementDawn broke over the Briar Glen estate, painting the heavy iron gates and snow-dusted lawns in pale, cold shades of gray and gold.

Inside the master suite’s private sitting room, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the terror of the previous night. A roaring fire crackled in the marble hearth, casting a warm, flickering glow across the Persian rugs and leather armchairs.
Elena sat in a plush velvet armchair, wrapped in a thick cashmere throw, cradling a now-sleeping Leo against her chest. The baby looked peaceful, his breathing deep and even, a tiny milk bubble forming on his lip.
Standing by the window with a cup of black coffee in his hand was Lorenzo Rossi. He hadn't slept. He had spent the remaining hours of the night pacing the perimeter of the suite, issuing quiet, lethal orders to his head of security, Marcus, ensuring absolute lockdown and absolute silence regarding what had happened.
The sleeping night nurse had already been quietly dismissed with a generous severance package and a strict non-disclosure agreement backed by the threat of federal prison.
Lorenzo turned away from the window and walked slowly toward Elena. He stopped a few feet away, studying her with a gaze that was no longer threatening, but deeply analytical and fiercely protective.
"Marcus has already run your background check," Lorenzo said, his voice low and steady. "Elena Vance. Twenty-four years old. Born in Savannah, moved here six months ago. Worked three different retail jobs before the employment agency placed you here as an entry-level housekeeper."
Elena stiffened slightly, pulling the blanket tighter around her shoulders. "Did you find my ex-boyfriend?"
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Marcus found him. He’s currently locked in a shipping container down at the port waiting for me to decide whether to break his legs or drop him in the Atlantic. He won't ever come within five hundred miles of you again. You have my word."
Elena let out a shaky breath, a wave of relief washing over her that she hadn't felt in months. "Thank you."
"No," Lorenzo said, pulling up a chair and sitting directly across from her. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Thank you. You saved my son’s life when every doctor and every specialist I hired failed. In this house, that creates a debt that can never be repaid."
"I didn't do it for a reward, Mr. Rossi," Elena said quietly, looking down at Leo’s sleeping face. "I lost my own baby two months ago. My little girl... she didn't make it. When I heard Leo crying, my body just reacted. I understood what it felt like to be empty."
Lorenzo went completely still. The raw, shared agony of their losses hung in the air between them like an invisible bridge. He knew what it was like to bury a piece of your soul. He knew the hollow, echoing silence of a home that had lost its future.
"I'm sorry," Lorenzo said softly, the words heavy with genuine empathy. "For your daughter. No parent should have to bury a child."
"It changes you," Elena whispered.
"Yes, it does," Lorenzo agreed. He leaned back, his expression turning resolute. "Which is why things are going to change here immediately. You are no longer scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets, or taking orders from Mrs. Gable."
Elena blinked in surprise. "What? But my job—"
"Your job is now to be Leo’s wet nurse and primary caregiver," Lorenzo interrupted with absolute, unarguable finality. "You will be moved out of the staff quarters in the basement and into the executive guest suite adjacent to the nursery. You will be provided with a dedicated wardrobe, private security detail, unlimited access to the estate's resources, and a salary that makes you a millionaire by the end of the year."
"Mr. Rossi, I can't accept all that," Elena protested, shaking her head. "I'm just a maid. People will talk. The other staff—"
"Let them talk," Lorenzo cut her off, a cold, hard edge returning to his voice. "Anyone who speaks a single word of disrespect toward you will be packing their bags before sunset. This house belongs to me. And my son belongs to you, as far as his health is concerned."
May you like
He stood up, walking toward the heavy oak door. Before he opened it, he paused and looked back over his shoulder.
"Rest, Elena," Lorenzo instructed quietly. "Get used to your new reality. Because the moment you stepped into that nursery last night, you tied your fate to the Rossi family. And nobody touches what belongs to us."
