Part 2: The Whispers in the Dark

By midnight, the hospital had grown quiet. The media had caught wind of the "Funeral Miracle," and a crowd of reporters was gathering outside the main entrance. I sat in a plastic chair next to Elena’s bed, listening to the steady, reassuring hum of the ventilator. Her vitals were stabilizing, but she remained in a deep, medically induced coma.

I pulled out my phone and plugged in my headphones. For the hundredth time, I played the audio file Elena had sent me three days before her collapse.

"Daniel, if you're listening to this... I don't have much time. I found the files in Marcus's office. Project Lazarus. It wasn't a vitamin supplement for pregnant women, Daniel. They're testing a synthetic neurotoxin to mimic brain death. They're going to freeze my assets... they're going to take our baby. Don't trust my mother. Don't let them—"

The audio cut off with the sound of a shattering glass and a muffled choke.

I stared at my wife's peaceful face. Project Lazarus. Vale Pharmaceuticals had been struggling financially for the past year, their stock plummeting after a failed cancer drug trial. Elena, as the majority shareholder and head of research, had been trying to steer the company toward ethical practices. Her mother and brother wanted a quick fix, no matter the human cost.

Suddenly, the door handle clicked.

I quickly hid my phone and closed my eyes, pretending to sleep.

A nurse entered the room. Her movements were hurried, atypical for the night shift. She didn't look at me. She walked straight to the IV stand, pulling a pre-filled syringe from her pocket. The fluid inside was a strange, milky amber.

"What is that?" I asked, sitting up abruptly.

The nurse jumped, nearly dropping the syringe. She was young, her eyes wide with terror. "It's... it's just a sedative. Ordered by Dr. Vance."

"Dr. Vance is a Vale-appointed consultant," I said, standing up and stepping between her and the IV line. "Show me the chart."

"I... I can't," she stammered, backing away. "I was just told to administer it."

"Who told you?" I demanded, my voice low and dangerous. "Was it Marcus? How much did he pay you to finish the job?"

The nurse broke down, sobbing. "They have my brother! He owes money to Marcus’s loan sharks. Please, I didn't want to do it! They said it would just make her sleep longer!"

"Get out," I hissed, snatching the syringe from her trembling hand. "Get out before I call the police."

She fled into the night. I looked down at the amber liquid. This was the weapon. They hadn't killed her yet, but they were desperate to make sure she never woke up to tell the truth.
